Boxter loses power on the highway....emergency diagnosis?

(Yes...I know this isn't a 911, but no one has responded on the Boxter forum. I thought I'd shoot for a bigger cross-section)

Hi all,

My girlfriend's Boxter broke down on the highway today. I'm going to copy/paste her exact words about what happened, as I'm an early 911 guy and am very little use in this situation. Names have been changed to protect the innocent.

"Driving down highway. going about 60. the rpms keep going up to about 5-6 and then back down. Suddenly, they flew up to almost 7k rpms and then the car suddenly lost all power. and slowly died. It can be started, but once you put it in gear there is no power to drive.

The last time it was serviced in November I had all mostly the same problem, and it was the crank sensor that was not working, which was replaced.

same problem today but also smelled like the clutch burnt out possibly. "

Any thoughts, anyone?

Cool. Enjoy your trip. Did she smell anything weird when it happened? Sounds to me like it let go somehow and by "no power" she means that it's just not engaging at all and nothing happens when she lets the clutch out.

HI Mike
from what you have described, as suggested the clutch has lost grip or the hydraulics not working?? the other thing ,

"suddenly lost all power. and slowly died. It can be started, but once you put it in gear there is no power to drive."

no power to drive??? the throttle is not working?? I would check the alternator is OK and the battery, had this with a customer car and the thing did wearied things and then stopped on the motorway, would start but would not drive, fly by wire throttle would not work with the charging system up the duff, had to fit a new alternator.

regards mike
