Pointless Conversion Kits
RE: '74 911
I wanted to install a pointless conversion kit in my car. Petronix Ignitor or Crane Optical Kit??? I have both and will install either, depending on feedback of your experiences. I hear bad things with Petronix . . . and have heard nothing on Crane. Can anyone enlighten me to choose??? Thanks, HZSmileWavy |
I have Crane, it's good.
|
And I thought this would be about 964 body kits.
Pertronix works well, provided it's installed properly. Trouble is, some versions have instructions that don't properly explain CDI installation. |
Chuck it's actually about 959 body kits you just don't know it yet.
The crane kit doesn't look to be a bad one at all after seeing a good friend install it on his. I want do to put in the crane when my motor is running nicely. |
Are you sure its not about one of those Rolls Royce/VW beetle kits?
I have a Crane. Easy install. Works great. |
No experience with Pertronix.
Crane. Install and forget about it. Sherwood |
Hey, I am looking for this kit:

Installed pertronix in a 73T. Instructions that came with it were worthless. I posted a question here. Within 30 minutes Chuck had given me two sentences of instruction (it's only two wires after all!). It's worked flawlessly after that.
|
Pertronix,
2 wires. One goes to 12V+ and the other goes to the wire that used to run to the points. Thats it. Just installed one in my 67S race car. Car has NEVER run better. |
Very happy with my Crane XR700
|
Had Crane XR700 on my old 2.0E worked great. ;)
|
Both are good, I had an awesome experiance with Pertronix. They did not make a mounting set up for the inside of my distributor. But for $20 and a week later they custom made one for me. Works great but I just use it as a trigger for my MSD

Pertronix for 911S
Bill Hoke at Pertronix has made a fitment for the 911S distributor (0231 159 002) the product order number is #1866.
This fits the original 002 and also the newer 050 style. Bob Fleming |
Bob you old dog SmileWavy How ya been?
I've also been thinking of an upgrade for mine. Will the Pertronix trigger a Permatune? I've been running the Permatune/mechanical points for 20 years and it's time to change. Paul Bork |
Hi Paul, the Pertronix will trigger the MSD AL spark box so I would guess it should trigger the permatune. But, anyone have this fitment working on their car?
When are you going to have that 6 running. Bob Fleming |
I've driven Crane XR700s for hundreds of thousands of miles, very reliable, never had a problem. Literally "set it and forget it" for the life of the car.
I've known a couple of people that have not had good luck with reliability of the Pertronix. Something about the glue in it, or something like that. One even sent a bad unit back, only to get ANOTHER bad one as a replacement. |
I use the Crane and it works great. Only issue that a few have had is clearance, a disc now sits below your rotor and raises it up. This may cause some rub on the cap, you can file down the part that rubs on the rotor or take some off the botom of the rotor for an easy fix. Also, if you have this problem take a look at the cap and the springs that hold it on and make sure they are even; the cap may have a slight tilt causing the rub or even making it worse.

I put a Pertronix kit in my '74 with CIS in 7/2002 and it's given me no trouble since.
|
Who sella the crane? Easy to install?
|
I've had the Pertronix for quite a few years now, First with the original Permatune, later with Bosch, and now with MSD. Works great with all of them.
