Where to find distributor number?

I looked over the distributor while its installed in the car and cannot see a part number on it. I need to order a pertronix ignitor kit for it, but am not sure which kit to order. The car is a '69 but the engine is based on a '77 911S donor. The build sheet from supertec says "mod. '77" for the distributor, so I am guessing its the stock '77 distributor modified to work with the MFI and for this car.

Just want to be sure so I dont end up with the wrong part.

I would check again for a part number before buying the Pertronix. If you don't pull the distrib. you may have to get a light and dental mirror to look for the p/n around the back.

The number on mine can't be seen without a mirror.

reading the part number in a mirror..... is that backwards or upside down? <G> ;)

Hi Terry
2.7 US delivery should use a 0 231 184 001 or 004. They both use the 1867 or *91867 Pertronix unit. We stock it and install them. Although they claim to bolt right in, that's not quite true. A proper installation takes a little modification.
*I recommend the Ignitor II for both reliability and increased performance.
Good luck

In what way? The timming or something else?

Terry, what made you give up on points? do you have a problem you are trying to fix?

I have a stock 1977 2.7L and have been thinking about this topic too.

Henry Schmidt 05-20-2004 07:37 AM

The Pertronix unit does not fit into the distributor as well as one would like. The modification is simple but necessary.
The reason to eliminate points is simple maintenance, "set it and forget it", to steal a phrase.

FYI the the number on the case may be diffrent from what is actually inside.

Henry Schmidt 05-20-2004 07:58 AM

Don't overthink the problem

If your build sheet says " modified 2.7 distributor" and there are only two Pertronix units that fit all 2.7 dist. it would follow that choosing either one of them would work. The difference between dist. is the way the points mount. Basically the points mount on the left, on the right or the are two piece. There would have been no reason to change the plate in the dist. only the advance curve.

Henry,

Thanks again. "Modified 2.7 dist." is exactly what my build sheet says. I'll give you a call about ordering one.

I used the mirror and flashlight method to get this number:

Distributor no: 0-231-184-007

This is not on the web link below and neither is my year 1977.

I thought I read the last digit to be “7” and not "1", is that possible?

What do I order?

emcon5 10-01-2004 07:42 AM

0 231 184 007 is for engine types 911/85, /90, /94, or /99, which makes it from a 1977 911s, for US/Canada/Japan markets.

How I know this, here:

Tom

Great, but which Pertonix do I order?

Ronin LB said (from the link above):
ahhh.. that's the dizzy with the wild vac retard if it's connected.

He is correct, there is a UFO shaped thing with a tiny spout (going no where) sticking out of the distributor. my shop removed the smog pump last year as it was not working anyway.........could they of been connected at one time?

POTENTIAL PROBLEM:
When I pull up on the rotor it comes up about 1/8" in play. Should I just order a rebuilt Bosh distributor and give up on the old one?

Also I plan on installing a MSD and can not tell if the rotor has resister built in, could become an issue according to this: Henry Schmidt

The 1/8" play when pulling up on the rotor has opened up a whole new can of possiblities.

Looking around I must have been working off of old bookmarks, lots of new stuff……….but which to use?

$600 and up stuff, pretty fancy is the old girl worth it?

Distributor no: 0-231-184-007

The KISS method, will it save me?

Problem is the first set of points the shop put in this spring llasted less than two weeks. The shop owner said he's never seen a bad set of points out of the box like that. 4,000 miles later the car has eaten thru the points again, or so I gather from a number of problems.............trust me it's the points. I don't want to be changing points every couple thousand of miles..................could there be a bigger problem causing this? What is the acceptable amount of play (vertical only) in a distributor?

RoninLB 10-01-2004 09:36 AM

I bought the 2.7 Carrera 004 dizzy for less than $300 new. Pelican Parts have them. I wanted the advance for carbs. It was in the CIS for about 25k miles before that.

kach22i 10-01-2004 10:05 AM

1867

Just to keep it in the forum for future users, Ron got my PM and e-mail me back. It went something like this:

kach22i wrote;
Thanks for getting back to me, looks like I will be
ordering 1867..............thought it was that one.

There is no side to side play that I can feel in the
rotor. There is a up play of about 1/8". I recall
reading that there is an "O-Ring" seal down in the
distributor that if worn may cause a "popping out"
effect of 1/4". Not enough to blow off the cap, but
enough to require re-setting of points.

I just noticed you also have MSD, that is next on my
list. Also SSI's on the list.

What is JPI? Don't tell me I need that too (smile).

Why do I think points?

No low end power, acts like a turbo lag, starting
problems, and recently a rough idle.

It's been a steady degration, I should know what bad
points feel like by now. I just wish I knew the cause.
Points should last more than 4,000 miles, right?

PS: Any one can chime in and set me straight, always grateful.:)
