Whats inside shock-absorbsion bumper mounts

During strip down - one of my shock-absorbsion bumber mounts broke off its mounting stud that secures it to the tub. My plan is to grind back and prep whats left of the stud and weld on another. My concern is whats inside the mount to allow it to 'spring' back? Is it gas, oil or just a spring?
I don't want to weld it until I find out whats inside it so any advice would be greatly received.
Regards
Rob Justice

You can use heat stop paste if you are using an electric welder

Welded it last night using the Mig - It went ok with no problems at all apart from me cracking myself!!!!!!
Used the wet cloth cooling method - glad its finished.
Now to get the bumper mounts blasted and painted.
