Odometer repair in a '69 911
My speedo works great but the odometer finally bit the dust. I got things apart and was going to check off another of the 101 projects. My odometer is different than the later models shown in Wayne's book. It's dated 6/68 on the back so I presume it's original.
The gear shown by the arrow in my pic. below is the culprit. It is driven by a metal worm gear that the speedo. cable plugs into. ![]() As you can see in the pic. below, the brass gear pressed onto the end of this gear is chewed up and needs to be replaced. ![]() Does anyone know where I might be able to buy this gear? The only sites I've seen that sell odometer gears just have the the wheel-type gears. Thanks in advance. |

Have you tried e-mailing www.odometergears.com and asking them if they have the part or can refer you elsewhere? Otherwise, I'm sure North Hollywood Speedo can help you...but you're right...for a lot more than a $3 gear. Good luck.

Hey Sundaypunch,
Let us know how you make out. I think the odometer in my '73 911s has the same problem. I'd like to find a solution that costs less than having it rebuilt by PA Speedometer. -Juan

At this point it looks like I'll have to send it in for a rebuild. I can't find anyone that sells that gear. From what I have found out the rebuild shops replace it with a similar plastic gear from another mfg. Of course they don't sell the gears to the public. I will check back in if I find a source.
As for rebuilds, N. Hollywood Speedo estimated $140 on this model. Speedometer.com in Texas estimates $75-$90 which is probably where I'll be sending it. |
