Anybody know about Beck 550 Spyder Replicas??

Hi,

Anyone out there know or own a Beck 550 Spder replica?

Are they any good?

Who makes the engines? (Are they 356s)etc, etc,

They are beautiful.....

Do other companies make them as well?

SvK

Not much personal info. I believe they're made in Brazil.

Yes, they are beautiful!

Yes, they are pretty darn good, I've seen several up close, several in the Houston Area. I believe that even though they are a replica that because of their quality they are rather respected among Porschephiles. From what I understand they are relatively faithful to the original 550 in execution, but I believe they use a typeIV VW motor that has been hotrodded a bit. I'd love to get one if I had $20-25K sitting around for just a toy.

For a real hot rod, Thunder Ranch sells a version for a flat six if fun is above authenticity.

I like it! I saw a real one for sale on a French website. They did not give a price. I guess if you have to ask, you can't afford it!

Has anyone been able to put a 2.7 or 3.0 litre engine and 915 transmission in a Spyder replica?

I think they only made <100 original 550 Spyders and the original ones usually go for around $500K. Not bad considering they were about $6K new back in the 1950s, although that was a lot of money back then.

Vintage speedster in LA makes a great replica of the Spyder. If you want it to really rip, aircooled technology should build your motor. I believe they are in GA.

Vinatge built a speedster for me a few years ago, they did a great job and are awesome to work with.

There are 2 or 3 manufacturers making these replicas. The better ones use a tube steel frame, not unlike the original. They are however deadly(just like James Dean) on modern SUV choked roads - they are too low and too light. A fender bender in a 911 or 914 would mean death in one of these.. They are beautiful though..

incredible quaility,l see Beck out at the Pomona swap from time to time with one of the cars.He offers several engine choices but the bare bones starter motor allows 0-60 in 5.5 seconds! You can go with the six cylinder, many options of 4 bangers, even rotory.Beck 550`s are the best replica`s out there(IMHO) and at just over 20 G`s for a turnkey car the value is excellent. That would be silver with the red interior of course, check out their website for all the cool info

From what I've seen, the Vintage sypder is a 'nicer' replica. I have seen one close up and it is a quality car. I've only seen the Beck in photos and magazines, but it just doesn't look quite right to me. Maybe it's the seats/interior or something. Check out both upclose and personal before you decide though. Good luck

Well I don't think the Beck is the 'best out there' any longer. Check these guys out with their 'authentic' reproduction.

Not cheap by any stretch though.

Yeah but with the low weight and antique rear suspesnion, they are a real handfull. Most are big fours or smaller sixes.....

One drove down my street the other day. First time I had ever seen one that close. Man, what a beautiful car and the exhaust note was fantastic even for a 4. You could just tell that that thing would jump as soon as he got on the loud pedal. Would be a great toy to have!

i did some homework on this because i thought of building one. from what i found the best overall kit is made by vintage. i say this because their chassis is much stronger as it has two roll hoops fore and aft of the seating position. one at the engine bulkhead behind the seats and another under the dashboard. makes the car much stiffer and maybe, just maybe a little safer. the fit and finish on their fiberglass bodywork is also much better.

From reading his website, Chuck Beck seems like a true blue Porsche enthusiast. If the Pelicanheads were to design the perfect "pelican" p-car, I suspect it might look a lot like Beck's spyder. I think he also has a 904 replica out there somewhere. Here is a picture of one...

Beck sold the company a while back and they are decent replicas. He always discouraged the six because weight is more of an advantage with the car than power. 250 or so more lbs can ruin a ride.
