3.4 break in process?
Quote:
Nothing new on this one. My Porsche mechnic and engine builder...well actually he is a German trained Porsche engineer who worked as a winning Porsche factory crew chief for years among other jobs, said, "warm it up good and then bring it back for an oil change, valve adjustment between 600 and 1000 miles or no warrenty". "Past that just drive the thing they are hard to hurt". Actually he suggested I break it in on the track but then he would void his 12 month 12K mile warrenty. Too much money to do that! I changed the oil and filter at 50 and 100. Both times you could see metal on the plugs and in the oil under the right lighting. I'll do a change again at 500 and then back to the shop for a valve adjustment and another oil change @ 1000. Switching to Mobile 1 at 1800 miles. Then I figure we are back to 3000 miles on oil changes and 10K mles on the valve adjustments because of how the car is set up. So what I have followed is a mix of my builder's instructions, Wayne's rebuild book's suggestions and the web site below. Made me feel better anyway. No idea if any of it actually makes any difference. I just want the engine strong and reliable for at least 150K miles. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm Good link with Wayne's comments. Engine Breakin I have been using a low mountain pass to do runs on up and down to seat the rings under load and compression. At 300 miles the car is beginning to gain noticable power and breath. But there is so much going on, the engine is so powerful in comparison to the 3.0 and since I haven't been in the car for 5 months some of it may well be my imagination as I begin to open the car up. |
