New Fan Housing Strap

I just replaced my fan housing strap with one bought from Pelican. This new strap, with a 964 part number, seems a bit shorter than the old one. I had to go with a 1/2" longer bolt to clamp it together. After tightening it down, the new strap conformed to the housing but it seems that the old bolt is still a bit short. I'm pretty sure that the housing is sitting correctly on the engine as I could rotate it a bit before it seemed to settle in a groove. I would assume that if the housing was sitting off the peg and therefore too high, it would be difficult to get a proper fan belt adjustment. Can anybody confirm this?
