Question Where is the VIN Stamped on the Engine?

Where is the VIN # stamped on the engine?

Why would there be a 6,200 RPM Tach in a supposed '71 s? It should have the 7,300 RPM tach. What would be the reason other than the engine being swapped out. If it is an S engine with the 6,300 tach could it be due to having carburators and not mechanical injection?

Thanks

The VIN is not stamped on the engine. The engine number is on the right hand crankcase, on the vertical casting adjacent to the alternator shroud. The engine type number is on the horizontal part of the right hand crankcase close to the engine number.

According to the Stoddard parts manual, you have a 71S engine. The first number should be 911/02 for engine type. 631**** is the correct sequence for 71S engine serial numbers.

What color is the engine shroud? I know later Esses have red shrouds so I think you should as well. Sounds like you have the wrong tach.

Okay good. The tach had me wondering there for a bit. I don't know why someone would have put a different tach in my my car. Should the carburated cars have the same redline as the mechanical injection cars?

'S' tachos sell for a lot more than 'T' tachos.

It could be that the PO had a problem with the tacho & replaced it with a cheaper (& more readily-available) T tacho whilst he had the original rebuilt.
