Grinding noise when turning steering wheel

Backed her out today and noticed a grinding sound as I turned the steering wheel. Made some turns and the same grinding (noise much like bearings with no lube) sound in both directions coming from the steering column.

Any ideas on what this can be appreciated.

Probably, the slipring / wiper contact.

Could be the wiper if it is a scraping sound and the wheel turns smoothly.

If it is crunching sound it is likely the "U" joints in the shaft. There are two and they should be lubed every 50k miles or so. If it is the "U" joints you will likely feel it in the wheel, a jerky action.

Do a search on this question. There was a longer thread recently that had some solutions to this issue. Try searching, "steering wheel noise" or something to that effect. Good luck...

I had this problem a few months ago, ignored it and it went away. :D
