For not much more then a Speedster you could have bought...

OK, so I didn't have $12K in November of 1974 (I wasn't even a teenager yet  ), but you could have bought this...

For those who might want some further elaboration, here's the rest of the story...

You big tease! What's $12K in today's money?

Trust Me 05-22-2004 05:33 PM

Should start calling the numbers in the ads. Remind them of there past mistakes.

pwd72s 05-22-2004 06:04 PM

I don't regret spending $9,300 back in '74. ;) Hey, at least I've kept up with inflation...but don't want to talk about the expenses over the years.

Zeke 05-22-2004 07:12 PM

Oh man, if we could get the ones we sold back for 10 times the price.

Examples:

1957 Corvette sold for $1400 in '64.
'61 Corvette $2000/'68
'50 MG TD $1200/'72
'36 MG SA $2000/'72
'56 VW Convert (a few hundred)/'70
'65 VW Convert (AFH)/'73
'62 VW Transporter, Single cab (AFH)'74
'77 Targa $6800/'96 (well maybe not that one @ 10x, but it should have been a keeper)

Crachian 05-22-2004 08:45 PM

Hey pwd72s, out of curiousity, did you consider "old" cars when you bought your '72? If so, which ones?

That's about $36K now.

What a waste of money... I knew a guy who got his Ferarri GTO for few thousand less then that in the early 70s.

I wonder how fast I could get to work in that thing?

Icemaster 05-23-2004 06:46 AM

'67 Shelby GT500 - $3500.....

<<Sigh>>

The irony of the story is the fact that the very car that almost won the closest competitive Le Mans in history could hardly be sold for much more then the price of a Speedster in 1974 -- Just 5 years after it's moment of glory.

Needless to say, it has since been restored to its position of prominance

<b>$46,739.82</b> (in 2002 dollars)

inflation according to the Consumer Price :

BTW, how about the price of those Shelbys?

Of course in 1974 I was making $2.10 an hour, and bought my '66 GTO for $600.00

Actually, I was looking for a new 911 back then...but one look at the '74 bumpers, and I started looking for used. A "coulda-shoulda" story? Around the same time frame, Marty Vomund & I were looking for an old race car we could go "partners" in for autocrossing. We found a 550 spyder in Portland, it's 4 cam engine a basket case in a box, it was running a Corvair powerplant at the time. Body was mint!
Asking price, $3,200. We passed...:( :(

Hindsight is always easy. These items likely were priced high for the time that they were offered (and probably needed work as well).

So what "bargain" P-cars will we be kicking ourselves about in 20 years?

jluetjen 05-24-2004 11:33 AM

That 908 was a serious bargain even in 1974.

KLR 05-24-2004 12:42 PM

I wonder how poor Walter Rucker, the fellow selling the Pantera in the righthand column at a 30% haircut, feels about all of this now. Ouch.

Used cars are definitely the superior value.

sundaypunch 05-24-2004 12:42 PM

I have a hard time believing that Aase Bros. would sell it at a bargain price. Of course that would also depend on the condition it was in at the time. Either way it is a fascinating article.

fryardds 05-24-2004 02:12 PM

While I was attending Rennsport II, a good friend of mine introduced me to his old friend Dennis Aase. We all three spent the the better part of the day together. Dennis is a very nice and humble guy. I spent most of the day like a fly on the wall listening to both of them talk of their days racing together in the 70's and 80's. Dennis, the driver, and my friend Tom, one of his crewmen.

Here are 2 photos of the car that is advertised for sale. This is at the Can-Am race at Watkins Glen in 1974. I don't think this is the car in the article though, since it mentions that the Aase brothers bought two 908 cars and the one in article was a back up car that wasn't used.
