I have a compuer networked to the garage as well as a print server to print Pelican diagrams on. The laptop goes out on the patio with a nice grilled steak and anorandack chairs for a relaxing surfing session after work. I have upgraded my security with a garage sensor and now have a 3 oscilatting cameras around the place to view/record everything day and night. They can be set to scan the area or lock on a specific coordinate.....And the cool part...all controllable from a remote location via website OR server....In other words I can pan and rotate any camera to view any area I choose in real time from anywhere in the world including SAT systems on cruise ships.....Nice to be cruising the waters and tuning in to see whats up at the house from 2000 miles away in real time...Yes, computers are my other addiction...I'm currently working on installing a 5.1 Dolby card for surround sound Pelican MP3 clips and dvd's in the garage....I need a bigger garage but I would have to steal $ from the Porsche fund and I cant allow that. Next is live video feed/netmeeting for repair session help!!

Computer in the garage
I am going to put one out there, along with a TV hooked to my DSS running Speed Channel all the time! I am dead serious.
My wife is a car nut too. We met at an Auto-X. We moved into the house on Feb 1, and She has encouraged me to get the garage fixed up first. My whole house is wired in Cat-6 ethernet, and the garage has multiple drops. It all runs to a patch panel located in the left hand server rack in the spare bedroom (now known as the computer room). The computer I am putting in the garage will run a very stripped down copy of Windows, and I am going to use the remote desktop capability of my main desktop machine in the comuter room. That way I don't risk trashing a nice computer by using it in the garage. I am going to put an old printer out there to enable me to print wiring diagrams and such. I also have a fridge and a bathroom in the garage. |
I don't have one out there. The car demands my undivided attention and gets very jealous of others interfering with our relationship.

Yeah, I've got the "old" pc in the shop, hooked up wireless to the house, plus the tv and vcr (need to get the $40 dvd player out there too), and a AC unit to keep it cool. Don't have a fridge yet, but working on it. But my shop does have its own 200 amp power service, I get my "shop" bill every month from the power company.
I have been thinking of putting in a security system to wake up the neighborhood incase someone decides to bust in. Don't know if I should get a house system, or wire an old 12 volt car system up. Anyone else done this? |
I've been planning to put my old 400MHz in the garage with a wireless router. I'll get one of the rubber keyboards so I can post questions when my hands are dirty. I bought some of these key boards for the machine shop at work and they've been working OK. They're not too good for fast typing but appearantly they clean up easy. The saleman said he throws his in the dishwasher every week (I didn't ask why it needed to be cleaned every week.)
I'll also be installing an EFI system on my car this summer so hopefully I can use this computer with a long cable to do the programming. |
I have a networked desktop computer on a rack hanging from the ceiling. I use it to feed files to the CNC mill.

Get a black Dell keyboard so it won't show the dirt. I clean my keyboard with Simple Green once a month or so. I like having the PC in the garage and the heat/col don't bother it one bit. I have speakers hooked up to it and I play MP3's through it. My music collection is on a PC in the basement office. Now I need to get a set of waterproof outdoor speakers to pipe the music near the pool for the wife and kids!
