Anyone esle have a computer in garage?

Does anyone else have a PC in their garage? Mine is connected to my home LAN and Internet via Ethernet cable in underground conduit. I use the PC to research stuff on Pelican Parts as well as other sites and play music (MP3's) while I work. I left it in the garage over the cold Michigan winter and no problems at all! It may seem excessive, but it's very convenient.

Note: PC is next to the "beer fridge"!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1085356436.jpg

I've set up a wireless network in my house so I just carry a laptop out to the garage to use whenever I need it. Works like a champ!

p.s. I'm jealous of your convenient beer fridge....I have to go into the house for that! http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

Funny! I don't have one in the garage, but do have a wireless laptop that occasionally makes its way into the garage when I'm having trouble.

Us "Geeks" have an image to maintain! :D :D :D :D :D

I tried the wireless LAN approach, but my house is a little too far from the garage and there is a 16x24ft swimming pool between the garage and house, so the Ethernet cable in the conduit works great. When the pool was being installed last June, I dug the trench, placed the conduit and ran the Ethernet cable as well as a gas line for the pool heater and heater for the garage and brewing rig so I can brew my own beer in the garage/backyard!

Sitting in the garage as I type. Got a full fridge of beer and a Porsche three feet behind me. Life is great.

Well, the wired network is probably more reliable, since you're working in another building. If you didn't have it wired already, I suggest something like this.

I've got one - it's a requirement!

Troy,

I usually sit in the garage while the kids are swimming in the pool so I can watch them and read the BBS at the same time. The weather hasn't been too pleasant (warm, but alot of thunderstorms, etc...), so I haven't gotten alot of driving in. Yep, having the PC and beer fridge in the garage helps!

I'm a total computer geek, I have a comp in virtually every room of my house including a server with SCSI RAID in the basement. I also have an entertainment server in my entertainment center. I do not however have a garage. No worries though since at work I have plenty of room to work on my cars and in addition to a comp for mp3's and searches in the workshop I also have a Bridgeport, lathe, TIG, MIG, small MIG, stick and gas welders plus a bandsaw and a Plasma cutter, I also have a sheetmetal brake and a 15HP rotary screw air compressor with a dryer which runs the shop and allows us to paint and sandblast without worrying about running out of air or water contamination. My brother in law, the company president, and I are huge car fans. He's got a daily driver TVR 2500M and another 2500M we are converting to Ford 2.3 turbo power with an Ford Mustang SVT 8.8 independent rearend with a Torsen diff. Our plant manager has an '83 944 and it get really crazy some weekends arguing over whose music we will listen to on the computer.

In this day and age everyone should have a computer and a garage cam.

Interesting timing on this thread..................

I just went and bought an extra monitor today so I could put my "old" computer in the garage. Not sure if I'll do the DSL connection from the house, but I'll at least have dial up for when I absolutely have to get to this board. :D

Actually, the main motivation for me is so I can have my CAD software available for designing new product. With a detatched garage, it's such a pain having to make sketches and then go into the house to put them in digital format.

Next year, the garage gets an addition that will house a better workshop (machine tools!) and a bathroom. Not sure if I'll even need the house after that!

And yeah, the fridge in the garage gets almost as much use as the rollaway!

Pat - your page has a 4/25 picture. Fenders in primer, doors hanging. If you aren't making progress, I passed you up :). My engine is back in! I know, you didn't take ANY shortcuts.

Jim - I have two 17 inch monitors in my garage - doing nothing, I suppose you wanted something flatter and bigger for the CAD stuff - but I am only 70 miles away and need to bring the Passat for some servicing at the 'closest' dealer. Not to mention Sierra Nevada.

P.S. The laptop reaches with wireless, but 7 beer taps (1 reserved for rootbeer) are always in the garage! Unfortunately only one has my GasBrew flowing - Pavulon Porter. I need to brew this week. The beer fridges and my neon sign are in the back of this shot. Pre-paint. Maybe I should turn the sign on for the picture next time.

You can also use the powerlines with one of the "homeplug" devices to connect your garage to your network/router. A lot easier than running ethernet cables and no reception problems. The neverwire14 works well for me.

I not only have a computer, I have a refrigerator, a TV, a stereo, and a phone. I thought these were neccessities.

ZAMIRZ 05-23-2004 09:59 PM

Well, no, unfortunately not an actual desktop in the garage. The house is setup for wireless internet and I often take the laptop out there when attempting a DIY or making small changes suggested by people on the board.

I have an office/fun room attached to the garage. I work on cars under a cover along side which is open to the yard. The garage opens to an alley. I don't like to be in there with the door open. People can drive by and see my *****. A computer is in the office, natch, and this one is in the house. Wifey has her lap roaming around on the wireless. Theres a spare PII/128 in a box. We're hooked up for old folks.

However, I'm light on the entertainment side. Only have little CS speakers on one computer (this one).
