steps to take after stripping...
Getting my steel 69 fenders and having them media blasted in the next couple of weeks. The question is, what are the bare metal steps to keeping rust at bay? It will probably be 4-5 months before I'm ready to paint... Never dealt with new bare metal so I'm not sure. Did a search and found some bits and pieces, but not THE thread...

If you are getting it stripe eventually, weld the flares on, then seal the bare meter with a coat of paint from a rattle can...it'll seal it well enough, then the blasting will remove the paint...undercoat the backside after you clean the surface witha wire brush (on a drill works good). The seam rust instantly when you weld, so you better clean it before you seal it.

I'm certainly no expert, but asked the same question a few months back on the AutobodyStore.com forum. I got a bunch of recommendations for Picklex20. Apparently very easy to spray on and wipe off.

Just spray with WD40 and wipe off the excess. If you bag them in plastic and store indoors they'll stay good for a vey long time.
Just clean them properly with Prepsol before fiiting them to the car and starting the bodywork. I had some shhetmetal sotred that way for 5 years and it still looked new. |
