Extensively upgraded SC.. Should I sell it?

Hi everyone, I have been bitten by the Turbo bug and I am considering selling my SC DE/Track/Street car.

Can you all give me an idea of what you think it is worth so I can get an idea if I want to pursue this venture or not.
Thanks

1979 SC

The car is pretty much a track day/street car at this point. Add a cage and it is ready for racing but I still drive it on the street to work, around town, to club meetings, and on timed rally’s. The motor is essentially stock but the rest of the car has been extensively upgraded to be one of the quickest street SC's in our club. Here is a list of what has been done. I am sure I have forgotten some.

We bent a couple of valves in the motor and had it rebuilt. Everything in the motor is new except for the bottom end (Storz recommended to leave it alone because it was in perfect shape).

Motor:

ALL New:
Valves
Springs
Retainers
Guides
Seats
Rockers
Rocker shafts
Seals
964 cams from Elgin
Pressure fed tensioners
Pop off valve
CIS intake boots
Wires
Cap & rotor
Plugs
Backdated heating system
Powder-coated all engine tin, fan, valve covers
SSI stainless headers w/heat
Dansk stainless 2in/2 out sport muffler
Sport clutch with aluminum pressure plate
Leak down test after break in period was perfect
________
Suspension:
22&29 Sanders hollow torsion bars
Racers Group fully adjustable sway bars
New rear spring plate bushings
ERP tie rod drop links (bump steer correction)
Re-valved Bilstiens front and rear by Mirage International (just had these done and WOW!!!!)
Lowered and corner weighted
Triangulated strut brace
Front brakes are 993 rear 4 piston calipers with slotted Carerra rotors (same pad size as 930 turbo)
Brake cooling to center of rotors
_________
Cooling:
Center mounted Fluidyne oil cooler with RSR cooling panel in front trunk
RUF 934 style front spoiler with oil and brake cooling ducts (Brand New)
Custom cooler 'Cage' (keeps cooler from getting damaged)
_________
Transmission:
Custom short geared trans
2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th shortened gears keep the power band above 4k rpm at every shift
Quaiffe differential
Rennshift spring loaded shifter (20% reduction in throw)
_________
Body & interior:
Paint is fair, original and showing some chips and wear
Body is good, no damage other than a slight dent in the top of the passenger front fender (shovel fell off the wall)
Interior is in great shape, no cracks in dash or seats or anywhere (full interior still in car)
Good carpets and rear seats also
Currently has a bolt in DAS roll-bar with both the original belts and 5 points for the track
I have two race seats that I put in when we go to the track but leave in the stock seats the rest of the time
Momo steering wheel
Sunroof is perfect and works great
Most of the AC has been removed externally (engine compartment) (AC never works in these old cars hahaha)
Tinted windows
Body Color is Gold and the interior is a nice medium chocolate brown.

I have a ton of money and time invested in this car and it is one of the fastest SC's in our club. It routinely beats cars on the track that are extensively lighter with more HP. The motor is basically stock and runs excellent, it pulls very hard with the new cams. At the last event we ran (Mountain View) the only car that was faster in our class was a 993 Twin Turbo by one tenth of a second and I completely screwed up turn 5a/5b on my timed run and lost at least a second. (I knew it right when I turned in and just started laughing at myself)

I can also provide all of the original parts that came off the car.

I have way more money in the car than I care to think about and don't really want to add it all up.... hahaha

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

After all the time, love, sweat, tears, and money used to sort out your '79, I'd suggest keeping it. Find a 930 out there and have a third 911!

Slider79SC 05-25-2004 09:55 AM

Here are a couple of pics.....

It has a different front spoiler than the one in the picture that is brand new.

David,
I would love to own all of them but I just can't swing that and still be able to eat.... hahaha

I may be selling the RSR project also after I get a bit more done on it so that it is a roller in primer.

Turbo bug bites hard! 3.6 swap would be ideal for this car and turn it into even more of a track beast.

If you are interested in parting out suspension components please email me at Jon.Theobald@bp.com.

Slider79SC 05-25-2004 12:09 PM

Thanks guys,

I have a hard time thinking about it and trying to figure out what to do.

JonT, I agree that a 3.6 swap in this car would be just too cool......

K. Roman, I wish!!! ;)

Put the money you get from the sale towards a new Carrera GT otherwise you just won't be satisfied.;)

chrisp 05-25-2004 12:45 PM

My car has most of the same upgrades except I have a fender cooler, stock front bumper, tranny has not been rebuilt, standard brakes, and Weltmeister sway bars.

To the plusses my freshly rebuilt motor and stock brakes are within g-class rules (worth something around here....may not be where you are), Fikse 17x8/9 wheels, and a WEVO shifter.

I would be happy if I got $22k for mine. Really happy with $24k.

Schuey 05-25-2004 12:52 PM

is it ONLY more power your looking for?

are you looking for a 965 or newer?

Slider79SC 05-25-2004 12:56 PM

chrisp,
Thanks for the info, that gives me an idea of what I might get.

Schuey,
Power is one of the things I'm looking for, also a little more street comfort. My wife really doesn't enjoy the car anymore except when we are at the track and that is becoming more infrequent lately due to rising costs and just life in general.

I am kind of leaning towards the early 930's due to price.

ubiquity0 05-25-2004 01:13 PM

Have you considered that a stock early 930 is probably significanlty slower than your SC on the track, & will be until you dump a ton of money into the suspension?

I vote for a 3.6 conversion. You've upgraded everything elso to where you want it to be- just plug in the engine you want & go. Seems ALOT easier than getting a 930 & totally revamping everything.

warning...does not compute.

You'll likely never get anywhere near what you've put into your car back out. I think you have to decide what your most important criteria are (comfort, speed, cost, etc) and go from there. Whatever you buy will likely not be near as well sorted as what you've got, so take that into account

Joe Bob 05-25-2004 01:23 PM

You'd be lucky to get 20K for it....more if you part it......

My vote is the 3.6 or a turbo upgrade to the car you already have.....why start over?

Elombard 05-25-2004 02:00 PM

What wheels do you have for it?

I would love this car but I am not in the market. That color might throw a few people.

I agree unfortunatly that you will be lucky to get $20K - now go out and prove me wrong!

ECU + turbo

I just finished yacking in another thread about 9.3:1 turbo quattros making >400whp from a 2.2l I-5. Talk up tbitz and tsuter about the ECUs they have and if they have any experience with NA-realm CRs.

rdane 05-25-2004 04:06 PM

3.2/3/4/5/6/7/8 top end...

worth every penny and beat the costs of a 3.6 transplant.

chrisp 05-25-2004 05:03 PM

Depending on the track a well sorted SC like yours is not a whole bunch slower than even the fastest cars. On handling type tracks (like Lime Rock local to me) well sorted G-class cars with good drivers run in the 1:04's. Factory cup cars do :59. It's just not night and day...and often the drivers in g-class cars end up learnign more become they are momentum cars.

I think if you want a turbo for the sake of what the turbo offers then go for it. But if you are trying to go faster on the track then I think you are at the point where you will spend serious $$$$ to take only seconds out per lap.

aigel 05-25-2004 05:48 PM

I think you would be very hard pressed to sell the car for 20k or more. If you want to move the car and not wait around for a buyer 15-20k will be a much more realistic number. Of course you have dumped a LOT of money into the car but unfortunately - as we all know - that doesn't at all determine the cars value, after you are done.

One problem I see is the fact that people like to modify the car themselves and pick what they build. It is part of the fun. As you race and modify piece by piece, your skill grows with the car. Also, a 20+k initial investment to go racing is rather steep. A decent SC to beat around can be had for 10k and you can start autocrossing the next day. Then you can build it piece by piece as money and time allows. It's almost like car payments. ;) I sure wouldn't have been able to buy into a 20k+ car, even though it may as well be a 20+k car by the time I am done.

A few more things the car has going against it is the fact that it is gold on brown and that it has CIS and is not smog exempt in most states. Anyone with 20+k can buy an early turn key car that is lighter and faster or they can buy something that is a bit more in tune with current main stream taste.

That all said, you need to look at an option nobody has mentioned: You need to buy a 930 of the same era, e.g. a 79 and swap over the race parts from the SC! Once you are done, you may sell the SC as a mildly modified car, or keep it for going to work!

If the SC is put back, using the turbo suspension bits, it will be desirable for an autocrosser or weekend driver. In that shape, with the nicely rebuilt engine and SSI it may bring almost as much money as it does in its higher modified state now.

Cheers, George

What are you doing Jeff! You've put a ton of work into that car and can't sell it yet...... at least not untill I catch you :)

Seriously, this car is well sorted and Jeff has put a ton of work into it. You ought to see the work he put into the front cooler alone! If someone is looking for a car that is ready to hit the track running, this car can do it. Ok, so it's gold......who cares! At the end of the day, it's the times that matter....at least to me.

Most of you are at altitides less than we are......5000 ft. A Turbo gains great advantage at altitide and I also admit to being entriqued by a Turbo track car. The last few in Excellence definatly got me excited.

Jeff, after all of the work you've done to this car, why not see if Dave (Dart) can get you a 3.3 Turbo as a transplant. Sell your rebuilt SC and plumb in a turbo motor. I like the idea of a narrow bodied turbo.

Do what's right for you Jeff.

UTKarmann_Ghia 05-25-2004 08:20 PM

I kinda like the gold color...
