Dust Shields - How do you remove them (easily)?
 

I want to remove my dust shields in a lazy manner (I really don't want to pull the calipers, rotors, and whatever else off each wheel).

Can I use tin snips and go at them? Will this work? Is there a better way (I'd think a "Sawzall" is a bit aggressive...)?

Just trim them down untill you can properly remove them - think drimmel tool

I think it might be easier and faster to do it the right way.

It is a pretty tight fit against the disks and you might damage the disk if you are not careful. Not to mention that it will be a real PITA to get back there with the disks in place.

So, how do I do it the right way?

I know I pull the wheels, calipers, rotors... then what? How much has to come off? Do the hubs come off? Is it all bolt-off then bolt-on? :confused:

You have to strip them to the axles (good time to do bearings!)

Keep the cut off wheels and dremel tools off your brakes and suspension components.

Just look up the replacement of rotors or wheel bearings in the manual, that's how far you have to go. It takes a couple of hours at the most.

yup, wheels calipers then rotors. After that you have to remove several bolts to get the shields off. The front rotors are a little more time consuming, you have to get the bearings off first. But pretty simple proceedure.

OK, I've got a track event in two weeks... with the BMW Car Club. :cool: I need to do this stuff right.

I'm going to repack the front wheel bearings on my out of (correctly) pulling the front dust shields. While down there, I'm going to install the 993 deflectors. Sounds like a plan. :D

Get the smart racing hub block off thingys too. Otherwise you will have to take the whole front assembly off again to install that. You will see that you need those things when you have the front disks off.
