Thanks for that info...
I found a broken head stud and rebuilt the same week, b/c of the fear of doing more damage... Hmmmm....Question: In the following picture, is the black goop/stain around the middle cylinder caused by the hot exhaust fumes that may have seeped out of the cylinder with the broken stud?

yup. it is gummed up a bit around the broken stud, but no evidence of any other leaking or metal damage.
I must be livin right. I bet if that broken stud was on the end instead of the middle things would have been different. |

if you glass bead the mating surface, i bet you'll see some irregularities that should be machined for a proper seal. the center ones have more support for sure, but the black areas are from exhaust leaking out, so the head was lifted off the cylinder every time the charge fired off.
