let talk mufflers

I have a euro 3.0 installed in my early car and the current stock muffler is big and ugly. my pro wrench says that he's removed many aftermarket mufflers due to loss of HP after a dyno test.

BUT.... I have the bursch exhaust that was on my 2.2 on my garage floor. I'm quite positive that Bursch is much lighter than the stock banana. I think I'd rather loose a slight amount of HP at the bottom if I can similalry loose a bit of weight at the far rear.

amy I crazy for this manner of thinking? I've ripped out all sort of stuff in the interest of weight loss. it seems easier to improve my power/weight ratio by reducing weight rather than increasing HP

I'm half tempted to put a pair of Supertrapps onto my 3.2 for a similar reason. The Supertrapps are*alot* lighter than the Dansk dual-out on there now and they sound glorious. I had them on my 2.7 and loved the wall of sound they produced. I'm sure they would hurt the power slightly overall, but heck - I'm not racing.

here a dyno comparison of some mufflers....

sorry for the crappy scan

Also I have supercraps on my 914/6 (3.2l)

They are handy as I can adjust the loudness of the exhaust note, which is beneficial at track with Db regs

Burns Stainless here. 7.12 lbs for both(1 per bank). Fully user rebuildable. Whatever you do don't get a B&B, they have a 100% failure rate.

Cheers, James

Whever is making thos Ti mufflers for the 996 ought to make some for us...

Losing wt. in the rear is a good idea. Whether it si better to do that than to make max. hp or to change the torque curve is something that has to be diecided at a track - and will prob. differ at some other track.

The Supertrapps I had on my old 2.7 weighed 13lbs (for both). I *know* the Dansk on there now has to weigh 25lbs or so...

From the dyno sheet above, the Supertrapps didn't fare too badly. Plus, mine were modified to contain 18 disks in lieu of the standard 12.
