fuel smell under hood?
OK, I just opened my hood (front) and I now have a strong scent of gasoline. It is an 86, and don't really know what it could be. Then again, I haven't really looked yet. Is there an evap system that goes to the front of the car (I know my 71 had a vapor can in the trunk)? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. Especially if I fill the tank. Cure has been don't fill the tank. I have replaced all the hoses and the problem persists. Hope someone has some suggestions. The over flow tank seems fine so I guess I should check it out again.

I had a smell of gasoline that began to get stronger. Eventually, I could smell the gas while driving with the window down. I replaced the hoses in the front compartment and still had the smell. I removed the plate covering the bottom fuel pump and could see that fuel was leaking where there the rubber fuel line was fitted to the steel line going to the engine. There have been some recent posts on replacing this line.
There is one fairly recent and also check this out: Replacing pressurized fuel line from pump on 78 SC?

It's probably the cork fuel tank gasket.
964's have another problem, where fuel sloshes out on hard cornering (not that I ever did THAT). . .

Try replacing the gasket around the fuel level sender. It's a cheap fix, and I think that's a pretty common source of your problem.

mine has a fuel smell too. Its the new cork sender gasket. I think I will have to cut my own from some rubber sheet.

I will check out the gasket. By the way, I was able to buy a rubber gasket for my old car at the local NAPA store one time. It's listed for their universal fuel sender. Maybe this can save you some cutting! If I remember correctly it even had the proper bolt pattern, seeing as the bolts aren't spaced equally around the sender.

gas smell
I had the same problem in my 79 SC and found that the outlet hose on the fuel pump had a small hole in it. I fix the hole and the smell disappeared.

Also check the seal on each end of the big filler line.
