Question What is a 105k mile 1982 911SC engine complete worth?

What is a 105k 911SC engine worth? (1982)

I'm thinking about installing a 3.2 or 3.6 engine in my car.

So if I sell the 911SC engine it would be complete with wiring harness, lambada box, muffler to air cleaner, clutch & flywheel (but without the a/c compressor).

The engine has no leaks, runs good, and just had the valves adjusted, new plugs/wires/dist cap/rotor and new fuel injectors.

Clutch was replaced at 95k miles.

And it doesn't smoke hot or cold (not on startup either... no puff).

Thanks... I'm trying to decide if I'm going to proceed on this project.

Tony, providing compression and leak down stats will go a long way to maximizing your profit....if they're good #s.

If I were in th market I'd love to see the engine running. If you have to remove take a video of it running (cold start, run, rev, stop, warm restart) for potential customers to view.

I would agree w/ Craig about the bargain, that's on the low side for a tight motor. That's a fair price for a complete SC motor needing a rebuild.

My '78 had about 200k miles, leaked a fair amount of oil but started and ran great. Buyer got to see it run in the car and had the option of taking it for a test drive. $3k.

And my engine had the Carrera tensioners, 3-8% leakdown,
flapper in the airbox...BUT no smoke under any situation once fairly warm.

$2200 - quick sale. I bought Craigs' motor, Can't wait to get it in!!

I've had 3 people so far offer me $3500 for the engine without the Lambada control....

I think Schuey's estimate of the worth is probably pretty close...

The Lambada control? What control?
You cannot control the urge to Lambada. Its the forbidden dance.

Tony,

If you sell just the engine, I'll buy the lambda brain box with the harness.

I'll second the $4500 number, that's what I paid for an 85K motor with a damaged exhaust about a year and a half ago, seems to be about the going rate.

Did that include the Lambada control unit & wiring harness (if your engine required it..)?

What about shipping? Did that include shipping?

TonyG

PS> I'm just trying to get the engine priced appropriately so not as to waste anybodies time (if I decide to sell it).

Yes it included the lambda box and harness, shipping from CA to OH was another $400.

So if you paid $4500 for your 85k engine with damaged exhaust, then I would think $4500 for one with 105k (with all the stuff) without damaged exhaust and complete new ignition system and fuel injectors should be pretty close to the correct price.

I guess I'm off to the classifieds......

As it looks right now, I'm probably going to buy a 27k mile, 993 Vario Ram motor complete with electronics to install in my '82 SC. I'm just hesitating on exactly how much fabrication (other than the exhaust) is going to be required....

I think you will wait at that price. Well see, you can always lower it. I think you could find a buyer in a reasonable time for $3500. They were not banging down the doors for my motor - admittedly smaller market for one advertised with a leakdown problem... I just think the market has gone to the 3.2 and 3.6. Until about 5 years ago the 3.0s were very expensive. Lets see what happens - good luck.

A very good friend of mine owns a Porsche dismantling shop here in Los Angeles, which sells a ton of these motors. He told me that the 3.0 engines are going up in price, as are the 3.2's. The 3.2's are going up in price because it's cheaper to find a 3.2 over what it would cost to rebuild a 3.0 (almost....) and they are a direct swap. But he also said that a lot of people want to keep the 3.0 in their car to keep it original, which is driving the 3.0 market (at least here in Los Angeles).

He told me that while the 3.0 has it's share of problems, the 3.2 also has it's own problems... so both are not trouble free.

My background is in 944 turbos (an extensive background), but I'm just not up on the 911 stuff (although I've owned 2 - 3.2 Carrera's and 2- 3.0 SC's... all were stock except one of the Carreras which was a Euro model that I added a test pipe, fuel controller, and MAF to..).

Thinking alike

Sounds like you are considering the same approach I am. My latest thoughts are to leave my 3.0 in the car, buy a 3.2 to work on (rebuild/upgrade) and swap it when I have it ready. I plan to do my own work no matter what approach I end up taking.

From recent searching it appears you can get a 3.2 for $5.5-$6.5k. Selling off the 3.0 for $2.5-3k puts my investment around $3-4k, leaving me room to rebuild the 3.2 how I would want it. It also leaves my 3.0 in the car until I'm ready to sell/swap allowing potential buyers to see it running and reducing my down time.

Haven't seen a lot of 3.2's out there though. Most of the major Porsche dismantlers have them, but I would like one that I can get a feel for how well it runs prior to purchasing.

Good luck.

I've worked on so damn many 944 turbo engines I just don't want to tool up nor do I want to spend the time to mess with doing any engine building... honestly.. I'm tired!

From what I've been seeing here in LA, a real good late model 3.2 complete with <50k miles is about $7500. A "decent" 3.2 with over 65k miles is about $6000, and a non-Vario ram 75k mile engine is about $7,000 and a <35k mile Vario ram is about $8500.

My 105k SC engine is real nice with zero problems and I just spent about $1000 on it for tune up junk (valve adjust, fuel injectors, full ignition replacement). I was planning on selling the car, and infact had a couple of buyers, but since I just bought the car, the DMV had not returned the new title, so the buyers "chickened out" :-) .... understandably so... but now I have the title in hand, but the car is so nice I really want to keep it. However, coming from a 400+ rear wheel HP 944 turbo, I'm missing the "thrust addiction".....

So tomorrow I'm pulling the 3.0SC engine out of the car.....

I just can't bring myself to install a 3.2 engine since being a HP junkie, the 30HP or so the 3.2 would provide just doesn't justify the additional cost.. however the 3.6 vario ram has got me dribbling all over myself as I type this... :-)

ehheehh
