What is this, what does it do, and what hose goes to that nipple on the front of it?

There should be a hose that runs from the cannister in front of the oil filter to the right side of the air box. It is a special hose with different size ends. It is part of the emissions control system.

Anyhow, i've never heard of a charcoal canister, i have no idea what it does, and i don't have ac, heat, or emission control in the car. Should i just leave that nipple alone? Plug it? What about the lines that go to the back of it?

The charcoal canister absorbs fumes vented from the gas tank and fuel system , mostly when parked. It is normally purged with fresh air when the car is running . They are fairly lightweight and have little effect on performance one way or another. I would probably leave it unless you are fanatically lightening the car.

you can only run epa certified colored charcoal in the early models do to the 1970's clean air act .....so sad

The charcoal canister bung was left open to atmosphere on the later cars like yours, and the hole on the airbox plugged with a rubber plug (hose 6 in the above diagram removed) so as long as your airbox has the plug your car is as it is supposed to be. Leave it installed it isn't removing any performance and is helping the environment a little bit.

Ok, i'm not that much of a freak to lighten the car, i was just hoping it didn't have any crucial vacuum going to it. Anyhow, i think you mean hose 5 was removed, because hose six i believe exits the back of the canister, around the front of the engine bay, to the left side of the air box. The hole that is plugged on my air box is on the right side facing the canister. Thanks for the information guys.
