'78 SC engine pump?

What's the component to the left of the fan that's driven by the belt?

It is the air pump, part of the smog equipment. If you follow the hose from the pump it goes under the engine and connects into a U shaped little manifold that feeds air to the exhaust valves.

No no no, that's the 'light speed reactor'... push the red button in the glove box to warp ahead of the competition....

I better put the bottle down...

Yes definately the air pump used to "thin down" the exhaust gas for you poor folk in the US who have severe smog legislation. In the UK we pull off the pipes and blank the holes into the cylinder heads then throw away the "gubbins" describe in your post into the bin. It is not required in UK and releases more BHP and makes you go faster, whoopee.

Horsepower gain to be had by removing air pump and air injection system is trivial. Jim

Grant,
How do I "blank" the holes nto the cylinder heads. I have a 78SC and no longer required to pass the smog test in VA. Also, the pipes are all rusted. I would really like to take off the pipes to clean up the underside of the engine compartment a little. Thanks, Andy

Jim,
Thanks for the link. It looks really good. Where can I get my hands on some of these plugs?. Who is the supplier?. I don't think my local Home Depots and Lowes stores have them. Thanks again. Andy

It's the "air-pump" though I do wish it were the "light speed reactor."

Andy,

If you can't get the plugs I have known "some" to weld up the ends of the pipes that go into the heads, it's not very tidy but does the same job. Be careful unscrewing the fittings that go into the heads, they are not as difficult to get off as rusted-on exhaust nuts but can be a *****. Did the job on my son's 964 turbo without too much difficulty, the plugs we fitted had an "allen key" slot, on my '78 911SC they are small bolt-headed plugs. LOL.
