'89-92 C4 (what issues to look for?)
I posted this in the 964 thread, but am unsure of traffic there...
as many here are aware of, I had put my 911 up for sale and I special-ordered a GMC Canyon, well the thing isn't coming and I'm overdue for a beer :D I'm looking at possibly replacing my winter drive and 911 drive with a C4... what do I neeed to know? I'm familiar with the 911SC/Carrera/early ones but will need some input here on the C4... I live in Northern MN and need 4WD and this would let me drive the 911 ALL YEAR?! |
Schuey,
I'm thinking about doing the same thing! but wondering if it would be worth saving a few extra bucks for a 993....Anyway my understanding is that it is best to look 92 or later because of some cylinder head leakage issues with the early 964s... |
dunlop winter sports (or equivalent) will allow you to drive your SC year round.
Have you driven a 964 yet? they aren't like an "original" 911, especially in 4WD guise. |

I'd never drive my SC in the winter up here...I need 4WD or FWD in the winter in northern MN (I'm 10 miles from Canada)
I've also found a '92 C4, so these do NOT have the head leakage issues then? |
Rennlist has a good 964 forum. As I understand, both C2 and C4 have the same cylinder head problem. Not all car have this problem, and it can be easily checked.
C4 has other complications such as needing the Hammer tool to bleed the brakes. C2 & C4 needs the distributor vent kit. Cost is $15. Replacing a broken belt is DIY or $300. C4 doesn't have the flywheel issue. --- anthony |
Buy the `92 C4 and turn it into a 953 clone:

be ready for massive understeer on the early C4. Buy the latest model AWD car you can to take advantage of all the updates and improvements
|
anything else? and MAN is the 964 board DEAD here...
