Stuck Tach

The first in my bunch of posts I'll be doing since I just got my 911.

My tach worked fine coming up on the 8 hour drive yesterday, just a little bit of weird fluxuations when switching gears, nothing that was a big deal.

Today coming back from lunch it just sat at zero, and I tapped it a few times and it popped up to 2, then slowly rose to where the engine actually was (about 3000). Once it was there it worked fine all the way back.

Anything I can fiddle with or look for to make it smoother?

Duh, I should know better. I just got back from lunch, pretty sleepy from all the pasta and breadsticks, mmm....

Oh, yeah, car..

It's a 1980 SC, 3.0

I read through some of the old threads that came up in search, but it doesn't get stuck in one place or anything, and it was working just fine all day yesterday on the drive home with several stops, and all morning, so it's not sticking in a particular place or anything.

my 77 has a similar issue. If I leave the car parked in the sun it sticks at zero then after a few miutes of driving it pops up but gets stuck around 3800-4200. Once some cool air gets in there though it works fine. I think the glass is expanding and hitting the needle since it creaks and makes funny noises. Once I squoze the rim and it creaked and started working again. Weird.

After fiddling with it some more, it does seem to be the same issue as you're having on your '77. The squeezing on the rim worked as well at one point. It doesn't seem to make any noises though.

So I guess that leads me to two questions:

1.) Am I at risk of burning out the tach if it's getting stuck in position? I was looking through old topics and came across that happening.

2.) If I get: Glass Face, Tachometer - PEL-GF-002 and Gauge Seal, Tachometer, 911 (1974-85) - C-641-903-00 is that likely to fix the problem, or will it be the same clearance?
