Can any of our counterparts in europe or the ROW tell us what they are using for spark plugs?

ZAMIRZ 06-03-2004 07:22 PM

Jeez, now I'm confused as all hell:( So a W3, 4, and 5 plug seems to "work" now all that's left is to see which one works best. Although this depends on your driving style, I wonder what the optimum setup is...

thomschoon 06-03-2004 07:31 PM

The plug requirements are specified in the owners manual that came with the car when originally purchased, maybe folks who have a manual could look and post what they find out. My manual, which is in German says W4 for an '81.

ZAMIRZ 06-03-2004 07:38 PM

Just checked mine, it says:

Bosch W 260 T 2 (W 4 C 1)

So I guess that's a W4 plug, and the Bosch PN is W 260 T 2

Can anyone verify this?

thomschoon 06-03-2004 07:41 PM

I have the same thing, also check your timing settings as they changed my sticker when they "Federalized" it. They used a USA sticker and setting which was not the same as Euro.

ZAMIRZ 06-03-2004 07:51 PM

I have no idea where to find the stock timing specifications on this thing. There's some information that resembles instructions on where the timing is to be set, but there are some really odd symbols that I have no idea what they are.

OK, now home where the parts pile lives....

I found a WR5DP in a box (sitting on a timing chain sprocket).

From the 78-81 spec book:

RoW:
78-79 W 5 D (W 225 T 30)
80-81 W 4 C 1 (W260 T 2)

USA:
78-79 W 8 D (W 145 T 30)
80-81 W 5 D (W 225 T 30)

turbo:
78-81 W 3 DP (W 280 P 21)

0.8mm gap except for turbo at 0.6mm

And of course this is from a 1st ed. factory book printed in '81, no consideration of retuning for emissions, fuel, etc...

oops, saw the timing query and forgot about it.

vacuum disconnected for all 78-81 data

5 deg BTDC at 900(+-50) RPM, except the '81 RoW for some reason gets listed only as 25 deg BTDC at 4000 RPM.

Strange that a RoW '81 would have it's own designation or does your manual stop at 1981?. How does the 25 deg at 4k compare with 5 at 900? What I mean to say is, how much advance is gained by revving to 4k on a US '81?

thabaer 06-04-2004 08:52 AM

As described above, the book covers 78-81 SCs. I had other work to do last night so I only was listing the idle advance instead of copying the whole section. For some strange reason the 81 listing didn't have the base listing for the advance at idle.

Since the higher RPM #s involve dynamic advance mechanisms, there's more data than I was going to have easily on hand so I wasn't going to spend a bunch of time digging around to get it all together. It still seems bizarre that the factory spec book didn't show any base advance setting for idle on the '81 model.

The guy at **********.com was no help.

I called them up,

I asked him if he could get w4 plugs or a rev-limiting rotor, and he just kept telling me if it not OEM he can not get it.

SpeedracerIndy 06-04-2004 02:03 PM

Wow, that's surprising. I called them up and they seemed to know exactly what I wanted before I even finished my sentence. I guess I'll have to find another supplier next time. Or, maybe Pelican will start stocking them... please...?

Swank911 06-04-2004 04:41 PM

Here is were I am at:

Pelican had 6500 and 7300 RPM rev limiting rotors.

I an no searching for W4 plugs. I have found them at the manufacturer's sites, but am seeing if I can get them locally.

SpeedracerIndy 06-04-2004 05:23 PM

I'm pretty sure the ones Pelican sells are for pre '78 which will be too small for the 78+ dizzy, plus you want a 6800 rpm limiter for a euro 3.0.

Also, the rev limiting rotor IS OEM for a 78-83 Euro 3.0 motor, so they should be able to get it.

Elombard 06-04-2004 06:18 PM

They can get it. Ask for Eugene $31 I think. He has to order from Germany.

Swank911 06-05-2004 04:42 PM

I have been running the over the counter rev limiting rotor, That would be why the inside of the distributor cap is scored!!

Thanks for the help.

Swank911 06-08-2004 05:43 AM

Eugene hooked me up. He has to order the rotors from Germany and they take some time to get in.

Need to find a distributor in EU that will ship to the US.
