From my site: "The 911L was only produced in 1968, and was the flagship model in the U.S. It was same car as a 911S except with a detuned motor producing 130 HP; the 911S was not available in the U.S. in 1968.

The car is equipped with a 2.0 litre flat-6 engine with dual three-barrel Weber 40 IDA carburetors, also known as a boxer engine due to the opposing cylinders. The engine produce 130 HP (148 DIN) at 6400 RPM and 120 lbs. ft. of torque at 4800 RPM. The car came standard with the 5 speed 901 gearbox, and for the first time ever the Sportomatic transmission was offered in the U.S. The car weighed in at 2600 lbs. stock an was good for 130 MPH.

The car had a base price of $7,000 for a coupe and $8,000 for a Targa, the most expensive Porsche that year. There were a total of 5,400 911's produced in 1968.

The 1968 model has many unique features for this year only. Unique one year features inlude a break away rear view mirror, left cam chain cover, 2 piesce dash, and side markers.

There were also many diffrences between the U.S. and ROW (rest of the world) 911L. The ROW 911L lacked Dunlop S/P 57 tires, alloy wheels (Fuchs), front bumper guards, fresh air blower, leather cover steering wheel, fog lights, four-way emergency flasher, stabilizer bar rear, and the notorious smog pump; all standard on the U.S. version. The only thing feature the ROW L had that the U.S. did not was a steering wheel lock. "

A U.S. 911L is basically a 911S with only a 130 HP.

I believe it also had 14" wheels and a hydrolastic suspension as part of a comfort package. It's really closer to an E than an S. most have had the hydro susp. replaced long ago.

The hydro suspension was introduced in '69 for the 911E. The 911L has regular torsion bars & shocks.

No, No, and No! The L came with 15 inch Fuchs in the US, the suspension was identical to an S, and it is not closer to an E than a S. Can anyone tell me another diffrence between a L and S in 1968, other than the engine?

As I understand, the "L" was a Luxury as opposed to the Sport "S" model. You could dress up either car, but the cams on the "L" were designed to give less ultimate torque, but a flatter curve over a broad RPM range, making the car easier to live with on a daily basis. The following year, with the wheelbase stretch, the both up-scale models got fuel injection, (the T got Zenith carbs) and the luxury car was re-designated the "E" for einspritzung. As mentioned above, the Hydrolactic suspension was an option, intended to maintain ride height with additional luggage aboard.
Does that help?

Another note about the suspension. Some had 11mm front swaybars... that's like a pencil!

My dad bought a 911L in 1968 -technically my first Porsche too since I was only 10. It did not have fuchs and was a sporto. I dont know if he ordered it without the fuchs or if the addition of the sporto impacted the option package.
If I can find a pic of the car I will post it.
