has anyone else made this?

Hi everyone.
I'm new to the board. Here is a picture of my latest (4th) SC ( plus 1 356)and they say crack is addictive. I just finished restoring it. All the upgrades plus it's been on a serious diet! I am moving the battery to the smugglers box today. Has anyone else made a chin spoiler extension like this. It's home made cost me about $12 and is firm enough to force the air away but the metal behind it is soft enough to bend if I scrape it and not damage the valance. Just wondering what you all think.
Thanks Steve http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1086367283.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1086367326.jpg

I think it's a bit distracting from the rest of the car. Try painting those shiny washers BLACK so you can not see the rivets, then it may blend in a bit more

kach22i 06-04-2004 09:55 AM

You are brave for posting your homemade suff here.

You get an "A" for effort, and yes painting the connectors black will help.

RickM 06-04-2004 10:18 AM

Steve, Beautiful car and welcome to the board.

I agree with blacking out the Rivet washers (or grommets?)

Paulporsche 06-04-2004 10:56 AM

As Mick said, "Paint it black!".

BTW, why did you do this, and what benefit(s) did you see?

I think the front end looks a little high. It may be better to lower the car instead of extending the spoiler. The car looks great by the way. :)

Cdnone1 06-04-2004 11:31 AM

Thanks for the paint suggestion. I used stainless steal washers with black small alan key bolts.
I cannot get the car lower because I'm running 225's on the front and I start hitting the wheel well if I drop it more. As far as benifts I figure the less air getting under the car at speed the better, after all the don't drop race cars to the deck for nothing.
Steve

car looks great, go w/ black, welcome to the party.

RickM 06-04-2004 11:38 AM

With a more aggresive air dam Porsche included a rear spoiler to balance out. Your's isn't that low though.

There used to be an aftermarket spoiler company called Flex Dam which produced a FG spoiler with a larger tahn OE removable rubber lip. Too bad they're not around anymore.

}{arlequin 06-04-2004 12:26 PM

John (jluetjen) has an interesting front air dam extension as well. I don't have a pic, but send him a message, I'm sure he'll post it.

Groesbeck Hurricane 06-04-2004 12:34 PM

I would suggest blacking out the grommets also. I would also tell you to enjoy! Nice ride!

billwagnon 06-04-2004 02:38 PM

I think you should put wheels on it for steep driveways.... :p

K. Roman 06-04-2004 03:04 PM

What is that color called?
I think it may be my favorite yet.

Cdnone1 06-04-2004 05:22 PM

Thanks
It's a factory color from Porsche. I don't know the name but the factory code number is 30T. I agree with you, I've had them in red, black, silver and dark dark blue and this is my favorite color so far.

Nice car! The air dam is creative and I bet it is functional too. Next you should go for the flat underbody skin.:D Is that color adriatic blue metalic? I like it alot.

Hey this guy was smart and did not show us all the holes he made for the metal behind it.;)

Cdnone1 06-05-2004 09:25 AM

I used the existing hole that the chin spoiler attaches to the valance, I bent metal to extent drop downs to the chin spoiler mounting hardware and attached a one inch six foot strip that I bent to follow the shape of the chin spoiler. I didn't drill any holes into any original part of the car just modified my parts so I could take them off and return the car to stock. I can take and post some pics from behind if anyone is interested.

I love seeing homemade stuff! Is it 'cause I am cheap? Maybe. Is it 'cause Porsche parts can be pricey? Probably. Looks good, keep 'em coming!

geof33 06-06-2004 03:31 PM

Looks good.. Paint the grommets...

One thing though... You have taken an already funky balance issue and made it worse. Running a front spoiler without a wing, is not the best thing in the world, it can cause rear end lift at high speed. By extending the lip, you made this phenomenon worse... Just a thought.

A duck would look great!!! Love the color!!

Jack Olsen 06-06-2004 05:37 PM

I agree on painting the washers black. But I can make no judgements whatoever on hardware-store-style modifications -- my car has many pounds of Home Depot products in it, and a Campbell's soup can that's very visible in the back. ;)

Cdnone1 06-06-2004 05:47 PM

thanks for the feed back. I'm going to paint the washers this week. I have stripped all the weight out of the front of the car washer bottle, plumbing, jack, spare eveything including light weight battery in the smugglers box. The car seemed to wander in the front around 100 mph. After I installed the extension it seems to much more planted at speed. I figure I'm blocking 2 square feet of air flow times a 100mph?? Nothing scientific but seat of pants it feels better.
I'll post new pics with black washers when done

Cd - I think you are on the right track, but I have heard that the spare is part of the cars crumple zone.

raceman 06-06-2004 10:48 PM

are you planning to turn the car into a strictly track only machine?Because although l`m a gram shaver too(bicycle racing term) l draw the line at certain things. There`s a point of diminishing returns here and personally l`ll keep my windshield washer system for the imperceptable gain l might get for removing it.l do take my wipers off during the dry season though, but that`s more for view and wind noise.lt`s a constant struggle to decide what goes and what stays but more then once l`ve found myself reinstalling things after some "situation" that occured due to my race car for the street idea..my .02$

kach22i 06-07-2004 06:43 AM

I put on my front chin spoiler this weekend. I did not take it on the highway, so I did not go over 100 mph on Sunday's cruise into Hell (Michigan). However with the driveway I am using, I could not use anything lower.

Way back in 1983 I made a chin spoiler out of sheet metal and a rubber strip for the bottom of a garage door. The van was orange and I painted black tiger stripes on it. A year later the Tiger's made the roar of 84 in the World Series.

Who knows the real affect of a good chin spoiler.:D

Cdnone1 06-07-2004 08:40 AM

There has always been something about a steel rimed tire sitting basically surrounded by the gas tank as part of the crush zone that has freaked me out. I guess the weight saving can get out of hand but it's free and I am fortunate that it's not my daily driver and living in So Cal this car has never seen a cloud.
steve

c2 rower 06-07-2004 08:52 AM

did you buy that car from a guy in Minasota (sp) or Michigan recently? It looks familiar.

KobaltBlau 06-07-2004 09:19 AM

Nice car. I actually think the fasteners look nice in silver. doesn't bother me any.

It doesn't look like you have a rear wing, so your high speed lift probably isn't balanced. However, it sounds like the front spoiler compensates for the weight you have taken out of the front. At some speed, however, your lift differential will start to make the car handle noticeably differently. I would guess it wouldn't get you into trouble below 120-130

Are your fender lips rolled? how much camber?

Cdnone1 06-07-2004 09:59 AM

The fenders are rooled and I am running -.65 on the front -1.5 on the back balanced with me in the car. For some reason I nick the outside corner of the drivers side front tire if I lower in more.

Cdnone1 06-07-2004 10:01 AM

I bought the car in San Jose, but it was a complete beater. It had sat in the sun for ten years. the paint had peeled down to the metal and the interior was shot. I just finished (if we ever finish on these cars) restoring it
