K&N in my SC

I have an '82 SC and am thinking about putting one of those drop-in K&N air filters in... Anyone have any experience w/ these filters in this car? I hear it'll add 7-10 HP.

Comments? Suggestions?

Its reusable. Its oily. It has good marketing and great implications of performance increases, but on your SC........LOC.

7-10 hp huh? almost as much as a Cool Collar! Anyway, the consensus around here, and i believe someone had some dyno numbers, shows no difference in HP. I have also heard that the K&N doesnt catch as much dirt as the stock ones either...so most people just stick with stock. Welcome to the board, lots of information here and lots of really good guys who know their Porsches.

mojo werkin, welcome aboard. lovin the large bay area group. i dont think the K&N will do a damn thing for your horsepower. the filter isnt the governing factor to airflow. the airsensor plate is the tight spot.

It might add 7-10hp on a Mustang, but you'll get exactly zero gain on your SC. Bruce Anderson tells of running back to back dyno tests - one with the factory air filter in place and one with *no* filter in place (can't get much more free-flowing than that) and the hp gain on the dyno was exactly zero.

Don't waste your money.

K&N, what heartbreaks are made of.l`ve used them for years with no problems,on bikes,ski`s,cars and trikes.One of the cool things about K&N is that they can fit pretty much anything.lf you`re stuck on the advantages of a filter made of wood,good luck finishing that one off projectile you`re working on.Factory filters are okay,but K&N has saved my a$$ many times.Next time you build a car/bike from scratch enjoy the search for an OEM wood filter to fit your application.

I have a K&N filter for my SC, I also have a good stock paper filter. I've switched back and forth and I can't tell any difference in power between the two.

I really doubt you will get any increase in power. The only advantage to a K&N on a CIS 911 is you won't have to spend as much money on replacement filters. Of course you will have to buy the filter, and the cleaner, and the oil...... it will take a lot of miles before you are actually saving any money.

My recommendation is to save your money. The only reason I have one is because it came with the car. Buying one is throwing money away.

When I bought my SC in Feb, I pulled the KN and went with OEM filter (and put in a popoff valve). Primarily based on what was discussed here. You can have mine for the price of shipping. Funny thing is that I have had a KN my daughter's 200TQ for nearly 10 years and I did not realized they were so bad news until recently. She packed in that Audi a couple months ago so I have not replaced that KN as well. HTH.

I bought one for my 85 carrera,it was my first "mod" purchase. I didnt notice any advantageson on the road. However, I did conduct a butt dyno test at willow springs, in the streight away I felt a bit quicker with the K&N (I didnt get passed) I felt plenty of power left in the car.

I switched to paper for 1 run so I could see if there was a diference, It was a sutle diference, but it was definetly there in the steight, it felt a bit slower, almost as if I was going up a mild hill

So I came to the conclusion, that it may not be significant but there is a small advantage with the K&N with the throtle wide OPEN

If you had a carrera you could possibly see a power increase using a K&N, but with CIS on an SC I don't believe you will.
On a CIS equipped engine the biggest restriction in the intake is the air flow metering plate, not the filter. Since I know of no way to make the air flow sensor plate flow more air with less restriction (without pressurizing the intake charge) there's not much you can do to change that.

If you like a louder intake and how it looks, buy one and install it.
If you question it's effect on engine longevity, don't do it.
If you expect more power, you won't get it, or at least anything that you can feel or measure.
Dynos are not consistent run to run. Atmospheric conditions change, and the dynos have some error per run. If it's 5%, then you don't know if the 200hp result is 190 or 210. That is one reason why the K&Ns are so controversial, the claimed gain is so small you cannot definitively prove it makes more power. If they claimed 30hp, that you could measure on a dyno without a doubt.
The butt dyno is truly subjective, not objective. Many times more noise is interpreted as more power. There are too many perception/expectation influences. I wouldn't believe anyone's butt dyno with regard to a small gain/loss.
