Starting problems
 

If I drive the car, then park and go to start it a few hours later, it won't start right away. I have to try 4-5 times. Then when it does start it sounds like a lawnmower (putput-putput) for a few seconds.

If it has been sitting for a while or a few minutes it starts instantly. So it seems to have problems when it is just warm, not hot and not cold.

Any ideas?

get a fuel psi test gauge set from Pelican to diagnosis just about any CIS prob.

Is that the Bosch CIS tester?

it's not specific to our CIS.. it should be in Pelican's parts order catalog. it's not expensive and it's a wonderful tool.

Is there anything I can check before I get the tester?

what I would do for a hot start test is lift the air sensor plate with the key on to engage the fuel pump.. Hold it for 2-4 sec to build psi in the lines If it has leaked down psi to hot start.

if it immediately starts then it's the check valve or accumulator. Get the gauges anyway for the next time.

Sorry, I am new at 911s and this is my first attempt at working on one. can you please explain where the air sensor plate is? Do I do this procedure when the car is acting up?

- look for the arrow. it's easy to find when you remove the box cover. When your car won't hot start it's possible that fuel psi isn't being held in the system. A cause of this can be fuel leakage passing thru a fuel pump check valve or the accumulator. So when this happens you'll recharge the fuel system pressure by raising the air sensor plate with the key "on". Raising the sensor plate will activate the fuel pump. Only do it for 2-4sec to start with. don't do it for to long or you will flood the engine... you should hear the fuel pump start when you do this. If it starts after doing this hot start method it can be assumed it's the check valve or the accumulator leaking. party hearty.
