Just be careful with the notion that 996 maintenance will be any less demanding than 993 maintenance. The cars that can be had in the low 40s will very likely not have warranties, and 996s are not cheap to fix.

Paul I love Dark Green or any other color, well except pink, on a Porsche. I just don't like dark colors on my daily drivers. And I would like to get a white or silver 996 in the next 1-2 years as a daily driver. My current daily driver is a '01 Dark metallic blue VW Passat (was wife's) and here were it gets HOT, dark cars are ovens. Plus they are harder to keep clean.

Plus I like your car because it's yours;) .

You are giving him good advice and it sounds like you have a good feel for what would fit him.

The 997 comes out this fall. I think his decision rests a little on how price sensative he is.

996 prices have been weak for some time and will fall off a cliff once the 997 is shipped in large numbers. If money is an issue, he should wait ayear, or at least until this winter, and get a 996 in the off season.

If money is no issue with him, he should either buy a newer 996 now to have the car right away (try to steer him toward a turbo), or he should wait for the 997. If money is really no issue to him he should buy the 996 turbo now and keep it until the 997 turbo comes out.

There are some advantages to waiting for the 997. Its styling has received good reviews compared to the 996 and has some performance improvements. If it's important to him to have a new 911, he can buy a 997and be the first on his block to have the latest, greatest 911. Finally, he'll get the first year of a new body style, so a 997 will hold its value and stay in fashion longer.

Since money is an issue to me, I am hoping th 997 is a huge hit and by the middle of next winter I can pick up a dirt cheap 996.

So bringing this back around again....

He just emailed me an email he got from a potential seller of a 2002. Check this out...The seller is asking for a $2100 deposit in an escrow account before even allowing him to inspect the car....

"Here is how we will proceed:
1) start the transaction with me (or I can start it as a seller if you want, just let me know).
2) secure 2100$ to escrow (it will act as a third party securing the funds).
3) after you wire the money , I will ship/drive the car for inspection to you.....

This is the only way I can close this deal with you.
I'm a busy doctor and I can not meet all my potential buyers.
After the deposit is confirmed ,we can move forward."

Total scam right? I advised him that there are "plenty of cars in the sea and to walk away..."

If he is this sensitive, then a Tip 996 should be right up his alley. :) Just advise him to hold onto his seat when those prices drop like a rock (As if they are not already). I think the drop will be even faster with the 997 coming out. IMO.
