EFI project is running
I finally got my car done (sort of) and running. I actually drove it. It runs pretty well. I still have to do some stuff to it and start tuning it. I also have to learn the software better. I'm not a computer person. I had the llaptop seatbelted next to me whle driving around. That is safer than talking on a cell right? It was cool to see the motor paramaters while driving. Here are some pics

Very clean without the distributor. Did you remove your heads to match port to the intake? If not, how did you handle this?

Nice.
Who did the intercooler and plumbing? |
I also like no dist. That was one reason I went with the DTA. I didn't port match or anything. I will port next winter and when my wallet fills.
I did everything except index the crank wheel. I had a machineist do that. Dean |
Dean. is your engine a 3.2, or did you use 3.2 runners? The install is very cool. Has the torque improved with the conversion?
Craig |
mid spillin how much the DTA bits were? PM if you qanna keep ot private?
|
Hi Craig,
My motor is a 3.0L 930. I installed a Carrera manifold on it. The motor isn't running good enough yet to tell about how powerful it is. Dean |
I would say about $6K for everything. And I got a good deal on the intercooler core.
|
Congratulations Dean!
Looks like you went to a Tial BOV? Those things sure look good. Can't wait to hear how the Carrera intake works out for you. Edit - If you don't mind giving details, what injectors are you running? Are you using the 3.2 pressure regulator and fuel damper? 2nd edit as I look at your pictures - is that AQP socketless hose I see feeding the rails? |
Thanks Colin
55 lbs injectors. I am using an aftermarket regulator with the stock fuel damper. It took some time to figure out and do the plumbing. And yes that is Aeroquip socketless hose. I wish I liked the sound of the BOV but it sucks (blows) and it is loud. Dean |
I don't ever see mention of an air bypass when converting to EFI, but most (maybe all) systems I've seen have them. Did you find any alternatives for cold starting or was this the best way to go?
Are you going to do most or all of your tuning on the street or are you going to use a dyno. Are there good instructions for tuning that came with the DTA or did you have another source. Sorry for all the questions, but I still haven't finalized the details on my EFI conversion. |
How dare you!
You should have kept that wonderful and cost-efficient CIS and enjoy the torque ('cause it wins races)! :D |

With careful setting of the warm up maps there is no need for a idle control valve. FWIW the end use of the engine Ive been involved with are track engines... The idle and warm up controls differ with the various EFI systems out there...some EFI systems are intuitive and easy to tune, others are a pain in the coconuts to set up... Most documentation that comes with the EFI Systems tells you how to install it, ie wiring etc, and has a cursory "walk through" of the software..They tell you have to make a base map to get the engine fired... after that you are on your own SmileWavy |
I got a turbo map with the ECU. The instructions from DTA are not that good. At least I didn't think they were. I do plan to go to a dyno some time but I first have to figure out some problems I am having.
Tim is right. I am using a stepper air bypass valve that I haven't been able to get to work right just yet. |
I suspected the air bypass was not really necessary (especially in Texas). I helped a buddy set up his electromotive system on a 3-rotor mazda without it and it starts and idles fine. I'll mark that off my list for now.
