I was wondering if anybody has come across this problem....
Pulled my engine on my '66 912, and when I took the car off of the stands, it was stuck in gear. I was finally able to get into neutral, so I thought nothing of it. I installed the new clutch & put in the engine to discover I cannot shift into any gears & the shift coupler seems bent down. Anybody had this problem, or know a way to point me in the right direction? I have pulled the engine before & actually restored the entire car, yet I am clueless about this. Any bit of help would be most appreciated & THANKS- Greg

Did you disconnect the shift coupler before taking out the engine? Otherwise, you can bend the shift shaft when the tranny swings down after the engine is out, and hinder/end shifting.

no, I did not. The trans plate is pretty messed up & split up the middle. What would be the next step to verify that I did, or did not bend the shift shaft & if it is bent, is there any way to repair it? thanks

What do you mean by: "trans plate" - the front transmission support? In addition to bending the shift rod, the shift rod seal is likely damaged and perhaps some other items (transmission front cover and other shift linkages). The horizontal shift rod going forward in the tunnel to the shifter may also be bent. The engine and transmission will have to be dropped to assess the problems. Someone skilled with a good hydraulic shop press and associated tooling and gages may be able to straighten the shift rods but I personally would replace the one that passes through the seal with a new part or a good used one. Cheers, Jim
