I need a little help.
I am looking to replace the distributor cap and rotor on the ROW 3.0L we put in our '73 911. The car is in my fathers garage, he pulled the parts and tried to get the part #s off of them for me to order new ones. I can not find the parts he listed anywhere. Can I a "US spec" cap? I need to have a rotor with rev limiter, as we autocross and would like that added protection. Also, what is anyone using for spark plugs with these engines? Thanks for the help

Call pelican they will know. I think they are the same? they look the same.....(not that that is useful). Pelican has the rev limiting rotor also.

My '76 is a ROW car and when it still had the stock 2.7 in it, I never had any problems using US-spec ignition parts. In reality, I don't think there is any difference. If anything the ROW cars used slightly different timing and mixture settings, but that's about it.
I used NGK BP7ES plugs. I think the NGK site recommends them for the 3.0 liters also. Great plugs. Mike

Thanks guys. I have tried to locate some site in the UK to see what they listed for part numbers, but all the sites had p/n's generated by the vendor, not Bosch numbers.
I have a message into pelican, waiting for call back.

I'm using a US-spec cap and rotor on my car (same engine as what's in yours) and it works fine

Zamirz,
Do you have any rev limiter in place?

Never had trouble w/ the US part #s, if I can't get the rev-limiter I just pay a bit more attention. BTW: I never use the US plug temps, stick w/ RoW ratings.

Where can I find documentation on what I should be running for plugs with the ROW engine?
I have tried searching several UK sites, but they do not go into as much detail as I would like.

Jon, I do not right now. I have some plans for my motor and will implement the feature in my next round of mods though.

My mechanic had Bosch W6DPOs, they looked ok, not black or white.

A US spec cap will work fine. The 78 through 81 ROW 3.0's used a rev limiting rotor that Pelican DOES NOT carry. I tried to find it through them before looking elsewhere. The pre '78 rotor is too small, and spins in the opposite direction. Vertex carries the 78-81 ROW 3.0 rev limiting rotor for ~$21.

EDIT: I just realized that my parts guys were usually equipped w/ the US/RoW data. Swank: fine taste in 2-wheelers too! Is yours the yellow-orange-red paint ? |

Thabaer - Red and Black. I love the thing, actually test rode a Palimino this weekend (though I still love hard tails) It climbed and handled awesome!!!!
Nothing climbs like a Klein. CDiercks - I will call Vertex this evening. How can I tell if I have the too cold a plug in? In a two stroke you can look at the plug and tell a lot, in a 4 stroke, the differences are not as obvious.

Palomino, hmmm tempting... a friend has a Mantra and it's sure a plush ride.
ZAMIRZ, I just came back from the dealer parts counter to pick up a previous order. The parts guy said both my 79 and your 83 use (get this) W3s whereas the US models get W6 or W8!! Not only that, the way he checked was by going to the 'merican AND euro sections of the PET, which he believes every dealer in the country should be able to do. Your dealer should be able to check your '83 part #s with no problem. Swank, are your electrodes showing any signs of erosion ? Last edited by thabaer; 06-03-2004 at 03:40 PM.. |

Not to change the topic,
But the Palomino was not plush like the old school FS's. It was almost as nimble as my Race. and hooked up on the climbs. If I remember correctly, 3s are colder than 8s why such a difference in the plugs?

The US engines ran cooler to reduce emissions, so the plug had a longer insulator to keep it from cooling too much.
EDIT: so a hot plug in a euro motor risks insultator/electrode damage and possibly staying hot enough to pre-ignite. |

After a year in the car, with street, autocrosses and a DE, should I see a sign that the plug was to hot?
They are W6DP0, which I thought I saw were cooler plugs. But I am having a hard time finding the exact definition of the "0" other than "deviated from orginal spec"

My '81 takes W4's according to the manual, when I got the car it had been tuned to USA specs and plugs, a big change when I went back to right stuff.

PP sent me W5DC plugs in the tune-up kit for an '81 ROW. Looks like middle road theory.
