That appears to be the standard scam - they send too much, or a pre-arranged dollar value over asking price, whcih they ask you to return the difference. They are banking (literally) on you sending the $$ before the bank determines the transfer is a fraud.

something like this???
Dear James A. Hamilton, Thanks for geting back to me.As i informed you in my last mail,my client have instructed that the check should be made out to your name provided that you will send the balance back to him through money gram and deduct the money gram charges from the balance so that he can be able to pay the shipping company and agents that will come for the pick up. That means that payment will get to you in cashier check of $58,000.00 So you are required to deduct cost of your car $50,000.00 when payment gets to you and refund balance $8,00.00 to my customer via money gram. After payment has reached you and balance sent back to him,our agent will come for the pick up and drive to a prepaid shipper to be shipped to my customer, while title papers and other necessary documets will be handed over to my agent at the time of pick up. Please Confirm this and provide name, address and phone number for check payment to be delivered to you via fedex courier . Alessandro. can you you say NO I DON'T THINK SO....

My buddy got scammed by a fake bank check when selling his GSXR750 last summer. His bank cleared it ok only to revoke it 2 weeks later.
Little off subject but, I was just on ebay 2 days ago and had the following conversation with someone claming to sell a 427 vette convertible (i love finding hijacked accounts and screwing with the perps leading them on in such a serious manner!).... Hi Brian, I have received your email regarding my Corvette. I'm living in a little town 300km west from Paris, Nantes. First you have to know that bidding is restricted since I am careful with my auction, so none will press the button until I have the assurance that he will buy the car. The car is in perfect condition, with no scratches, no damage, kept in our own garage. The price for the 1966 CHEVROLET CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE with shipping included is 14000$. The machine is an US model with US specs (speedometer in miles), it passed the test emissions and comes with all the documents you need to register the item. The winner will receive the TITLE, keys, owner manual... The car is in Europe, France and it will be shipped from here. Shipping will be done via FedEx and it will take no more then 4days. I have a friend at FedEx who will manage me a low price shipping. When I will ship, I will declare the car as a gift so that you will pay no customs when you will receive it and for this it will be delivered directly to your address. The most important thing in all my activity here is that I am affiliated at eBay Square Trade, I have a a purchase protection account for 21,000$ and I assume you know what this means. The financial part of this deal will be manage by eBay Square Trade. They are acting like a third party in this deal. Also, I have to let you know that I want a proof that you have all the money available for this deal as I will ship it in the same day or next day morning, after you prove you are the real buyer. Since this deal will be made using a THIRD PARTY to help us closing this deal, I prefer honest buyers. Anyway, if you want more details about this deal, please reply with the following informations: -Your full name; -Your shipping address; -Your eBay user ID. I will look for your email, so that we can move forward with this deal! ohhh... whether it is plasma TVs with Western Union or 427 Corvette convertibles, it is always the same. They live in EU, they are selling for half the market value, etc.... i posted something back from CNN.com on how to spot a foney. Beware of people trying to take your money and topics like this will help us all out. |

Old scam. I've gotten it 2 or 3 times already on an amp I had on eBay and Craigslist. I give them a very mean email back.

The Nigerian scam
I went through all this when selling my 67 911 earlier this summer. I received an email from "Engineer Allen Wash" from Ireland offering full value plus overage for me to pay shipper. He said he would send cashier's check. After a call to a fellow at Hemmings, I resolved that it was scam, but decided to play along, maybe get a little revenge. I pretended to cooperate, sent back "excited" and "looking forward to" emails and soon received the bogus check, mailed Fed-Ex from Nigeria but drawn on a Tennessee bank. Could it be more absurd? Then I then stopped all communication. This apparently drove him nuts, now that I had his check and he could taste success, because he bombarded me with badgering emails. He finally threatened legal action, even calling me, from Nigeria, leaving a scratchy, angry message on my machine. It was funny. After a few more days of tormenting him, I sent him a short email saying I'd handed his check to "federal banking and internet fraud officials" and he should be expecting their call soon. Of course, I never heard another word.
