How to: replace window switches?
 

Hi All,

I tried searching, and I got a lot of advice as to what to do to fix window switches and diagnose problem windows, but I don't know how to remove the switch itself. My passenger door switch broke and I want to replace it. Do I just pry it out? I don't want to hurt the door panel.

Also, would the window not work even from the driver's side if the passenger side switch is kaput?

yes, just pry it out gently from either the top or bottom (not the sides), then disconnect the wires, should be like 5 or 6 and reconnect them to the new switch, pop the new switch back in place and you're done. Simple task, easier than jacking the car in the air I'd say.

yeah...they come out rather easily...line up the new one similar to the old...note the colors of the wires and where they go...then simply pull the wires off the back and install the new switch. I hear they are problematic, but ive never had any issues with mine.

About why the one failing would effect the other...

The wiring for the passenger side window runs through both switches kind of like a three-way switch in a house does. If it didn't just imagine what would happen if one switch was pressed up and the other was pressed down.

I had a broken one on my drivers door........took it out stripped it and found the pivot pin broken. So I cut a piece of plactic coated wire and heat welded it back on..............If someone would have told me that I could have bought a new one for a few dollars I would not have spent 3 hours fixing the old one!

The new ones are close to $30.00 with shipping and may break in a week , so the repair is a better value. I repaired all three of mine like you did and they have lasted for years.

Is it likely to be as easy to fix a switch that jams in the down position? I get auto-open windows, but if I forget, the motor overheats and the thermal shut-off won't allow me to roll the window back up until the motor cools off a bit.

As Kemo said, make sure and note the way the wires are connected...if you take it off without noting this getting hooked up correctly can be a ROYAL PITA...don't ask how I know.
