Older SC, Newer Owner

After lurking for a few months, I've decided to jump into the water with our story...

We wanted a sports car.

We saved up our money and were going to buy an older Miata to play with until...

We spent some quality time with a friend's '81 911 SC.

We saved up a little more money and ended up with...

Yup, red leather!

We're the third owners of this 1978 SC!

It's spent its whole life (85000 miles) here in northern New Mexico. After new struts and a tuneup/valve adjustment/plug wireset the thing drives like new, not that I would know, being 4 years old at the time.

It seems to have been partially Euro-ized with H4 headlamps, amber rear corner lenses, no smog pump and one of those cats that looks like a straight piece of tubing.

Even here at 7300 feet, the thing is a riot to drive! I imagine they're more fun at sea level...

We've been to autocross school once with it and now we're looking for a DE.

I plan on doing minor work on it myself and am looking forward to spending more time on this BB. This is an educational group!

Excellent, you are going to have so much more fun with the 911 than you would with the Miata. So much fun stuff to buy and upgrade your car with and some great information on this board to help with the process. Good luck

Welcome to the board Mike. Good choice, 911SCs have way more character than any civilized Japanese car. I drove a buddies pimped out WRX last night & it felt a bit vague.

Thanks for the positive and welcoming comments!

I'll post some interior photos later -- the ones from yesterday didn't come out so well. Darn newfangled digital cameras.

We picked that car because while it was in great shape, it wasn't so nice that we would be wary to drive it every day and take it on road trips.

I think we'll be through Durango in a few weeks. We do a loop up to Glenwood Springs and back through Frisco/Leadville twice a year or so. Haven't done it in the 911 yet, we're usually in the road monster (Volvo wagon, turbo, fire engine red).

Running up to Taos for lunch is a nice 150 mile round trip. Maybe we'll do that today...

Thanks!

Vash,

Actually, that's what was appealing about the Miata. An early/mid 90's one would be nearly disposable. Something to chuck sideways down gravel roads in the mountains and all that.

The SC does not in any way feel disposable. I'm amazed at how solid it feels for such a light car. It really feels like it's going to be on the road for another 26 years.
