69 what is the step by step process of getting to the front instruments?
 

Specifically the speedometer. (This is not the removable type from inside the cockpit, only removable from under the front bonnet).

Is there a step by step thread somewhere for accessing the speedometer for these early cars? Is it best to remove the blower?...and if so how does the blower come out?

Looking at the back of the speedo & tach, you should be able the see a clamp held in place by nuts. Once the clamps are off, you should be able to pull the instruments out of the dash from inside the car.

I just did this in mine. You do have to get at it from the trunk.

-Take off fiberglass cover (if you have it)

-Remove blower. You need to remove the mesh air intake below the windshield (4 screws). You can access the 2 blower screws from this opening. You need to unhook the air hoses and also unplug the electrical connector at the front of the blower.

-Reach in and remove the speedo cable first. Pull out the odometer cable (it's a press in). Speedo is held in by a c-shaped bracket with 2 thumbscrews. Remove these and it will come out. Take speedo out from in the cabin and remove the bulb wires.

I've read that you can get to one of the outboard intruments more easily and then work your way across getting at the brackets by reaching thru the empty hole. Haven't done it and the '71's just pull out, but it's worth a look.

That is true, I've had the tach out without removing the blower.

Project complete......success...speedometer came out just as you said. Lubed and the noisy speedometer is now iin the past.

Only question is if ever I need to remove the entire unit, how does the "white grommet" pic below suppose to be disconnected (if it is at all), running the tripometer?? (poor pic below, but its the brightness at the lower right on the back of the speedometer.

That is a press-fit. You just give it a tug.
