I have been driving my car for the last couple weeks and it has this smell. Not oil burning, not greese, not brake fluid, just a strange odor very strong. Well every thing looks and runs OK but the H-4 lights seem to be working very well. On the way home last night I just cound not stand it anymore.....My eyes were starting to hurt. It smelled so strong that I had to stop. Well I opened the engine cover and the motor was not on fire. So I popped the front and Wow did it smell bad....I reached for the battery and felt alot of heat comming off of it. It was over 150f. I turned on all the lights,a/c and audio system to drive the last 2 miles home. Get home pop the hood get meter and 19V. Well anyone need some power for a welder or ? Bummer time for a new voltage regulator. 1972 914 now daily driver again. Race gas is not as expensive as it used to be compared to Super unleaded now. Thanks for listening, Mark

I had the same thing once when driving a 911 on around a 1,000 mile trip. God aweful smell. It actually got worse with stuff on or so it seemed. I turned everything off, drove the last 300 miles without it exploding and replaced the voltage regulator. Pretty easy DIY job.

not for nothing but I use a voltmeter and a marine battery clamp that has a wing nut on the ground. Battery disconnects should be a priority during fire.

battery sw is ok but could be more bs.. the wingnut allows a hard direct connect of your new marine ground cable..

The engine compartment just got steam cleaned with sulfuric acid. Washy time.
At a high school party a bunch of kids sitting on a dented hood once arced the battery which resulted in a 3-foot fountain and a pizza driver once pulled in with the battery venting steam like a kettle. Saftey first with that stuff.

I might need new carpet in the trunk of my 911 now and all the electric connectors need to be cleaned. No acid or fluid but I still need to clean the damage from the fumes. Thank you Mark

Mark,
I had a similar experience just after I purchased my 88. Prepare yourself for a new battery also as they can be wrecked by the high voltage.

Just a thought, wouldn't it be better to leave lights and other electrical items on in a case like this to reduce the charge available to the battery?

You need a new regulator... get it quick before stuff starts getting toasted. I was running 25 volts and didn't know it.

25 VOLTS STAND BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not driving it now, the 914 is back in action. Battery is new so hopefully I wont need a new one. If so I will put an Odyssey PC680 battery in the 911. The 914 already has the odyssey PC680. Thanks Mark
