Best non-sticky "undercoating" for inside trunk/front pan/battery trays
 

Hi all,

Just finished taking care of the minor surface rust on the front pans and battery tray inside the trunk. I sanded and wire brushed down to the bare metal, then coated with rust converter solution. It would look OK with regular spraypaint, but there are scratches and pitted spots that would cover nicely with textured paint.

I've used undercoating before, but it makes a sticky mess in the trunk. What paint is out there that protects against rust, isn't sticky, and has a nice texture to it, much like you see on the factory gas tank?

I was *thinking* about using the spray-on bedliner stuff you can buy at Auto Zone.

Let's see pics and suggestions as to how you've painted/undercoated your 911 trunks.

You might call/stop by the places that actually do it professionally (Rhino Linings, Line-X, etc.) for a quote. It wouldn't need to be sprayed on "truck-bed thick", and the area is relatively small, so it might not be too expensive. You would probably want to do all the masking/prep yourself though.

Look for someone who handles POR-15 in your aera. This product will give you the results that you want.

Get a POR 15 starter set (they ship quick) and paint the heck out of it following the instructions. (Three activities.) Paint top and bottom. Shoot under battery box. I used a squirter bottle I got from the dollar store. When it drys put any undercoating from an auto parts store. Let sit for a few days. Whole process will take several days but you will never have another problem.

The original is Wurth Stone Guard. Also known as Wurth SKS Schutz. It comes in an aerosol or qts. (you need a special spray gun to apply the bulk material).

You can find an equivalent at your auto paint supply. Jus ask for body texture or rocker panel texture. They will know what you mean. All of these products are meant to be painted over.

Ah, OK. I will try to find Wurth since I'd prefer an aerosol solution. So nobody has tried the bedliner solution?

the wurth stuff rocks! the shutz gun is required though.

Be sure to mask or cover the entire car. Overspray is tough to get off! Don't ask me how I know.
