Question 1976 930 Engine Questions

Is there anyone from California familiar with putting a later model turbo engine in a 76 930? By the time I upgrade this engine (111,000 miles) and add all the aftermarket items, I seems cheaper and easier just to buy a later model (78 and on 3.3) and install it instead. Any comments or concerns about doing this? Any recommendations? Will I be able to smog the 930 in California after that? Appreciate the help....

Should be able to smog it since a newer model engine is going into your 76.
You'll have the intercooler to deal with for the decklid. Also, i'm wondering how you're going to get a 3.3 turbo at any kind of reasonable price?
Don't think I've ever seen one up for sale....

If a newer yr engine is installed in New York the smog nazi wants you to meet the nw engine yr smog specs, including all relevant smog parts.

don't get caught.

There is currently the same rule in CA - if you notify anyone that the engine has been swapped.

However, the 1976 model MAY be smog-exempt in CA in January of 2005. This will only happen if AB 2683 is defeated. It may or may not be signed by Arnold. See The CA smog people are at it again (repeal of 30yr rolling exemption) for details.

As to the swap, the fuel pressure specs are slightly different (I can look them up if you want), and obviously the intercooler will require a new tail. Other than that, assuming you keep the short early 930 transmission, I think you'll be fine.

So they are starting that again. I got bit real hard when they originally did away with exemptions. I used to have a 1975 CJ-5 with a 1967 Chevy 327. I had an exemption for years until I believe 1994 when they changed the rules. Turned my perfect CJ-5 into an off-road vehicle. Funny thing; I was pushing 300Hp and my emmisions were less than the stock engine. I'll keep my eye on the latest debate. I love my home state but sometimes I truly believe that it is being taken over by the green party from Oregon. Ouch, my wife will not like that. If it goes through I will definetely be looking for a smog pump, the lines and the thermal reactors. Does the exhaust have to be the original design or will they pass you with the newer Euro style?...

It must have all the original smog equipment to pass the visual inspection, regardless of whether that equipment is cleaner or dirtier than what you have installed.

A Euro set up will not pass the visual...IF the tech. knows what he's looking at. 99% of smog techs will not have a clue about what they are looking at, and it will come down to the tailpipe results.

Keep in mind that the SmogII regions of CA are now measuring the cars on a dyno under load, and also measure the NOX output, something these cars were not designed for. As you lean them out to reduce the HC and CO, NOX will rise. It's not just a matter of turning a screw CCW to pass smog any more.
