Optima recharge
My 73 911 has two Optima six volt batteries. Seems that I have neglected to startt the car often enough, they are both dead.
What do I need to do to recharge them or get the car running?? Thanks Craig

When dead, they seem to like to be zapped. High rate of charge to start, then a full charge at normal rate. If they are going to come back, that is it. I watched a shop put 70 amps into it for 15 minutes, then normal rate 25 amps for another hour or so.

A battery charger?
I've let a (single 12v) optima run down (winter/alarm - combo) I recharged, (trickle charger) no problems . .. even years later . ...its been a great battery.

While Island was successful using the standard recharge method, I too have had some problems recharging an Optima battery, as have others on this board. The consensus here is to treat the Optima like a deep cycle battery in that you put the charger on the "start" mode which puts the highest amps available from your charger into the battery for around 10 minutes then go back to the regular 10 amp charge mode. Do not select the deep cycle mode on your charger.

Needs high rate of charge at first ( as stated) ...and can go lower rate or even trickle charge toward the end.

How long can one sit discharged before being brought back to life like this? I've let mine Optima discharge and it won't come back to life on a 10 amp setting.

this is a good post,l`ve had several of these batteries and l just today exchanged a bad one under warranty. The tech at Batteries Plus stated that the Optima responds best to an initial shock, then a charge for up to three days.He said he`s had some that may test bad initially but they`ll come back on after a long charge and be good as new.Personally l like the batteries but l`ve had two bad ones so far...

I find it is hard to bring the Optima battery back from dead with a regular charger. I use jumper cables on my wife's van and let it run for a while this brings them up enough for the regular charger to take over to top them up.
