Angry Gas Tank pulley broken...out...of...gas!

I have an '85 911 Targa. The pulley on the inside of the car on the dashboard rusted and broke while I was at the gas station. I can no longer open my gas cap. How do I jimmy the lid on the gas cap cover to pop open? I am low on fuel and have to park the vehicle until I come up with a solution. Thanx.

there's plenty of room to slip a bent coathanger or welding rod down past the flap to release the catch. you've seen how it works i'm sure.

...

I see there's room, but I do not know how the latch works. It seems as though I'll have to catch another 911 owner and ask him to open his latch. Is there any site on the net with a screenshot of an open latch or at least a figure/diagram of the tank lid?

If you can't grab any of the remaining cable to release the catch, you can remove the whole flap by unscrewing the 3 (4mm hex) hinge bolts located up under the LF fender. Good luck!

EDIT: Yeah, I'd definitely try JW's method first. Just mind your paint.

Ronin's string thing works perfectly. I carry a piece of nylon string with finger-loops at each end, in the glovebox. Every once in awhile, the tee handle will come off the end of the cable, unthread itself, and I have to use the string. Works just fine, no need to risk scratching paint.

yup! Since I learned this trick (on this board, by the way) I have a wrap of nylon cord securely taped to the handle of my flashlight...it's there "just in case". As Ron said, left to right, then pull boths sides back toward the latch...toward the rear of the car. The cord catches & releases the latch hook...bingo, you're open. Easy, once you learn the trick...And now we've just told thieves how to syphon gas from a P-car!

Thanx guys. I figured it out using a very narrow and thin flat-head screwdriver.
