CIS - Thermotime switch and exhaust smoking
Hey, Thought I'd run one buy you guys--
Tonight it was dark, I was going to tune my fuel mixture. I started up the car and it started smoking like crazy. I drove it around the block and it was still smoking. The kicker was that I couldn't see what color smoke was coming out of the pipe because it was too dark! I parked the car and noticed that one of the connectors to the thermo-time switch was loose. Seated it firmly, started the car up and no smoke! Would this make sense? No response from the thermo-time switch so the CSV was dumping fuel? Any takers? Thanks!

The CSV is only used at start ups. On a different note on a 77 280Z that I was checking out while it was running I disconnected the coolant temperature sensor wires and it started smoking probably running lean since it was white smoke not black. Connect back and went away however that car had a computer which is different from CIS .But that thermo time sensor sends a signal to the CSV. Not sure if your car was at operating temp or still cold but it should make a differance with that connect unplug.

The thermo time switch provides the ground side only to the CSV. If it is unplugged, then no ground and the CSV will not function at startup. When motor/thermo time switch is hot, the thermo time switch is open and thus there is no ground and the CSV will not work either and it should not.

Tsuter, is Nathan correct in saying that it may have been running lean upon startup? (Hence what possibly looked white (in the dark) smoke?)
Thanks!
