Overcharging Alterntor on Porsche 911t 1974. Help needed

hello

I have a 1974 911T engine 2.7L. that i have just fitted into the back of a 1953 VW campper van.

a few problems , 1 i cant seem to know the answer to.

The charging light goes dim when started up, using a voltmeter the engine charges upto 18-19V when reved up to 3000rpm approx. This seems way to much.

The battery is charged and in good order.
The regulator is brand new today (replaced today).

Any ideas?

thanks
Paul.grice@jpmorgan.com

You should have a marchel alternator in there. There are some wires inside the alternator (I think the call them feilds) That are rubber coated and held by these metal stands. When the rubber dry rots and erodes the wires then ground out causeing overcharging. (this is what my alternator guy told me ;I have 2 marchels in my cars) I think it is time for a rebuild about a 100 bucks by someone that knows them

paul,

sorry I can't help w/ your question but I can tell you that I'm pretty sure there was no 911t 2.7

I think the last 911t was 1973 w/ a 2.4

Paul,

Either the regulator is bad, mismatched to the brand of the alternator, or somehow miswired ...

The alternator was originally a 770 Watt Marchal [M16 threads on the shaft] or Bosch [M14 threads] ... so you need to confirm that the new regulator is appropriate for the unit!

Anything above 14.5 Volts will cook the battery and possibly damage other parts in the electrical system ... radio, halogen bulbs, etc.
