tranny swap in Richmond VA

Invitation/ request for help going out to any Pelicanites in Richmond VA area. I bought a tranny at Hershey, and the time has come to put it in the car. I have a couple of hurdles to overcome before I can schedule a weekend to do this, but I wanted to put some feelers out and see who might be available/ interested in helping and what their schedules look like.

I've not had the motor or tranny out of a 911 before, so any help would be appreciated!

I need to put together a parts order too. I already have a clutch to put in it. I expect there are some seals I should replace while I'm in there (from what I gather, I might as well drop the engine and tranny as a unit, and separate them once out of the car). Since I have an '84, I believe there is a head temp sensor I should do while I am there too. Any specific recommendations would be welcomed (I've done a search and am assembling a list from past posts, but any speciifics would be welcomed).

Thanks!

Russ

Do you have a good place to do your swap? I have three lifts in my garage. You are welcome to use one if you would like. I can probably give some assistance as well.

He does have 3 lifts; just don't let him do any wiring!

Good luck,

Tom

Wow! That's a generous offer! Given my situation I think I am best served trying to do it my garage, at least for the time being. Perhaps if I don't get it done prior to my move at the end of the month, I'll get back with you on use of your space (3 lifts, man that must be SOME garage!) I'd also welcome any help anyone would like to offer! Let me know if you want to swing by. A fellow pelican and I plan to do some serious work tomorrow night. Unfortunately, my weekends are booked for the next two weeks so I'll be out in the garage weeknights until then. Plan to have it all ready to go back together fathers day weekend (June 19-20).

At least you have a garage! And a kick@ss one at that! We're definitely going to have organize a Central Virginia Pelican Tech Session at your place!

Looks like Russ and I will be working on the swap tomorrow night. Should be fun!

And money....

Are you going to RPM (Richmond Porsche Meet) this weekend? Mr. Lindsey and I are going. Come by the house and we can arrive in style (or at least in something that runs!). Call me.

Tom

Shenandoah Valley Region PCA event. Held at Alex Smith's house off of Old Buckingham Road (he's got an unusually large back yard). It's a nicely done event with a concours and luncheon on Saturday with a road rally in the afternoon.
Sunday they autocross at Dinwiddie unless something as changed. Yes, Euroclassics is involved but so are G&W and others.

Wow, Thanks David, Olivier and Michael!

The motor and trans are on the garage floor and separated. Now time to order parts and start the "while I'm in there's".

Hopefully I'll get it back together before we close on the house!

Thanks again guys! I definitely owe you all a beer or three.

Garage
Geeze! What a garage! Man, could I use one of those lifts at my house. I think I found a local gas station, whose owner drives a C2S and he's willing to let me use one of his lifts for minor stuff.

Russ, you should plan on new or resurfaced flywheel, seal, bolts, head temp sensor, valve adjustment, valve cover gasket kit, oil breather cover gasket, idiot light switch and clutch assembly. Have fun. It's a one weekend job.

It's a great garage; it's just full of cars that don't run!!!

I think the proper thing to do is to help sprbxr finish his stuff so the rest of us can use the garage.

Yeah, we had fun last night. I took a few pics that I'll post tonight when I get home.

RPM (Richmond Porsche Meet) starts tomorrow night! Not sure what the weather is going to be like, the forcast keeps changing. My wife and I will be attending. I was going to bring the 914GT out of mothballs, but I haven't had the time to get it ready. Maybe next year... I'll see you guys there! I'll be the one in the Zinc Metallic Targa (with the really bad paint!).

I think the drop went well, having so many hands makes a lot of the process much easier. My wife let me have it about ruining my "nice" workout shirt, though!

Where is RPM?

Justin, that garage looks incredible! I am struggling with a one-car, and have to be careful where heavy things like engines and tranmissions end up after I take them out! Do you do your own welding, tube-bending, etc.? I am starting a low-boost TT project that I am using to develop some welding and fabrication skills, mostly, but it is definitely a catch-22 situation!

Ok, just a few snapshots of some Central Virginia Pelicans havin' fun!

The obligitory "man in the empty engine compartment" pic! (Russ, the happy owner of the now engine-less P-Car!)
