901 and 915 shift rod, any difference?

Hi,

Is the gear box shift rod (in the tunnel) different on a 1971 911 box than a later 915 box.

Basically, I am fitting a late 3.2 915 box and shifter in a 1971 car and wondered if I can just use the 1971 shift rod?

Thanks in advance

Alan, you will need the shift rod and the shifter for a 915. The 901 rod is longer (tranny shorter).

You will also need to modify the tunnel slightly. Take the nosecone off the 915, mount the cross bar, secure to tub, mark the two mounting ear locations on the tunnel (top driver's side), bump out with a hammer for clearance, you are done.

YOu may also have to remove/relocate the U bracket that holds the emmission lines. Mine interfered with the side of the tranny.

Alan,
If this is going into a car w/ a 901 pedal cluster you may also need to replace the clutch pedal bellcrank to the longer 915 bellcrank. I needed to do this to get more cable throw to accuate the clutch.

Thank you both for the advice. With regards to the bell crank are you referring to the bit that the cable connects too in the tunnel?

Cheers

Alan

"....you will need the shift rod and the shifter for a 915. The 901 rod is longer (tranny shorter)."

From Hayden's post on shift tube length awhile back:
"The 915 version Porsche # 911 424 020 00 is 867mm +/- 1mm overall length.

From recollection, the 901 version is about 15mm longer and can not be easily confused when checked with a tape measure."

FWIW, the longer 901 shift rod may provide slightly less fore-aft adjustment, but that combination works fine in mine ('69 w/915).

Hope this helps,
Sherwood

Alan,
Yes,thats the bellcrank Im speaking of.
Thinking back it may have to do with the 70-71 901 style cable and cluster, although a chck with the PET would confirm if they are indeed differnt from the pre 70-71 bellcrank.
The differnce in length of my 901 to 915 bellcrank was approx 20mm (915 being longer).I also did away with the helper spring and related parts at the clutch release arm and used a custom bracket to hold the cable, but I doubt that would affect needing to change the bellcrank.BTW the bellcrank is welded to the shaft that runs thru the pedal cluster and attached to the clutch pedal arm via a roll pin.
My cluster was in good shape so all went smoothly, but if you have rust and such be prepared for a wrestling match to get the pin and shaft out.

Good luck and best,
Thomas
