3.2 Upper Engine Rebuild Questions

On a 3.2 with 101,000 miles using one quart Valvoline 20/50
every 800 miles or so, smoking on deacceleration just starting
to need a valve guide job. Is there a difference in valve guides ?
and what is the opinion in doing new rings while you are there ?
Any things else that I need to check while the heads are off ?
What about new valves ? the heads are getting redone.
I only have so much money to play with, it is either put it all
in the engine or.... just do what is necessary and go with
exhaust, chip. This is a bone stock 89. The exhaust I am looking
at with a chip would be $2,000.00( Fabspeed,SSI's), The base upper rebuild is $5,000.00 (Great shop, done right !) It is this or
spend it all on the motor ?

Thanks,
Chuck

Leave the rings alone unless you have a reason to replace them (like breaking them during removal of the jugs).

My opinion is that you are a ways off from needing to replace anything. One quart every 800 miles is within specs. I would start thinking about engine work when you get down to one quart every 500 miles or less.

Without disrespect, I tend to agree with Kurt V.
Something tells me there's a lot of money being spent on Porsches without them needing it, really!

This is a case of I have the money NOW, I may not have it in a year or so when the problem gets worse.

Well fixing what is not broken is like burning money.

Put it in the bank or buy something that will add value to your car.

Fikse wheels
New interior
Even better yet -another p-car for the track.

Yes, manganese-bronze or phosphor-bronze are preferred

You will need to see whats what upon disassembly. They may be fine or not as w/ the cylinder bores.

You need to seriously think about budget and goals. If revs will be increased you need to go to the crank and do the rod bolts, If increased non stock performance is desired then valves, cams, exhaust and engine management will be needed.

It's tough to do this stuff incrementally.
