buying an '85 turbo

hi

not for me unfortunately, but a friend of mine is checking out an '85 turbo. i assume its a euro model, it has 27k miles (condition is said to reflect the mileage), and is uk £15k - I think its easily worth nearer £20-25k?

he needs some advice. whilst i can advise generally (i have an '86 na), I have no experience of the turbo model he is looking at.

anything particular to look for with this model?

any advice appreciated.

cheers.

Don't know much about turbos other than they go faster than me and I want their brakes for my car. That, and I know that an '85 has to be a Euro model; no turbos in the US from 1980-85.

complimentary 'bump' as I wouldn't mind a 930 one day.

Have it inspected (PPI).

Turbo's have a few more maintenance issues. For example, my wastegate needed to be rebuilt and I needed new O-rings in the intercooler and lines (intake is under pressure) shortly after I bought it.

See when the turbo was replaced (if it was) and how often. Also, oil changes (and oil weight) are more critical to turbo life. Lastly, see how many miles are on the clutch (it may be the original).

I would check the following:
Check for oil smoke on start up.
Check for oil leaks around turbo. (rear, driver side)
Check condition of muffler.
When you drive it check the sycro's
between 1st. & 2nd. and 2nd. & 3rd.
Ask how old the clutch is? If it's never
been replaced it may need one.

An 85 with 27 miles on the clock for 25k? That's a very good price.

A nit: If the car is an original UK car I'm guessing the turbo is on the passenger side...

Andy,
Your right, the driver would be on the other
side if it was made for euro.
