Smile 74 911s

I recently purchased my first 1974 911S. It has a severe oil leak coming from the area of the reservoir (while running). Visual inspection didn't reveal anything obvious so I pulled the reservoir to have it checked.

While I was doing that I noticed that the vent pipe going from the filler tube to the air cleaner was missing the Crankcase Vent Cartridge and that the air cleaner was full of oil to the point it was running out the front. The engine does not smoke at start-up or while running.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement vent cartridge and whats your comment about the oil in the air filter housing.

Thanks, Jim

Are you refering to the cannister forward to the oil filler neck? Oil in the airbox is due to an overfill situation. Might consider searching the archives as each concern has been extensively discussed. Good luck.

By Crankcase Vent Cartridge, are you talking about some type of PVC valve in the breather hose? Because there is no such thing, it's just a straight tube from oil filler neck to airbox.

Like Clinton said, oil in the airbox is normally from over filling the oil, you have to make sure the car is WARM and IDLING when you check. Don't ask me how I know...

Not true,
There is a thing in there on the 74s. It's called a backfire grid and is part# 901-107-729-00 according to a certain parts catalog I have. The problem is that according the site here they show a latter part for 78-81 that is not the same as what I have on my 74.
But, it doesn't really block oil from what I can tell. At least when I remove it, mine does not have oil in the hose.

I meant that the tube itself is hollow, although at the airbox there is a metal "grate" of sorts.

Thanks Guys for the feedback. Especially Pat, cause there is a THING in there. The owners manual for the 74 refers to cleaning it at intervals. The part listed on this site is not the right one and though as you stated it is probably not needed I will continue looking for one.

I seem to have fixed the major oil leak. It was the reservoir level sending unit gasket. In the process of R&R ing the reservoir I must have gotten oil down in between the heater box and exhaust. I can hear it bubbling and it smokes. Is there something I should do to clean it or just let it deain out and burn off.

Jim
