Couple o' pics and some thoughts on the new machine
For people who slave on these cars, these seemingly trivial differences are interesting, which is why I post it.
For example, interior light didn't work. Changed the bulb, and nothing, so it must be a fuse. Couldn't find the fuse box. Finally found it (owners manual has been ordered). Immediately realized, this is a whole new ballgame. And here's a pic of the whole trunk area without the carpeting in it With everything back in... Gone are the days where you take pictures to find out what wire goes where. Pulled the speedo to flip it 30 degrees (so I can see to 85 or 90 without having to look around the steering wheel). Just one connector. But you will notice the myriad of different lights on the clock for airbags, trunk detectors, and all this other stuff. For a minute there I had to leap outside the car and make sure the engine was really in the rear. Thought the guy mighta slipped a 928 to me while I wasn't looking. The clock is adjusted with the button below. You press the button, and it goes really fast forward. I have to admit, I grinned at that nifty little Stuttgart solution. Even more "wonder what that does" switches below the gauges. Also, while I was tinkering with my head up against the steering wheel to get a good line of sight I realized, if the airbag went off, it would break my neck. From then on, I tried to keep that in mind and will in the future. That may be the first thing to go because it makes me fukkin' nervous all the time. Just for the heck of it, some 84 3.2 wiring in comparison. Typical 3.2 wiring. Finally, some other pics, just for fun. The car will not be modified at all. However, it obviously needs to be lowered an inch and a half! Typical front interior Lots of power. Much more than expected or experienced at first. Those of you running with with these engines in your early cars make me sick! It's just not fair. Thought I would get rid of the 3.2, but as much as I like this car, it also demonstrated that there will be no getting rid of the 3.2, that's for sure.

Nice car Kurt. Very clean. Faster than 3.2.
I am going to add another Porsche to my stable, and like you...I will never sell the 3.2. So, Im deciding between a 993 Cab, C2 or Turbo... 3 different beasts, 3 different budgets, advantages to all... |

Wow, how freaking bizarre looking is that underhood shot?!? And all of the gauges seem to be full of lights. Probably very cool, but after a 3.2 must feel alien. I think though that there are probably enough similarities for you to know you're still in the best spot in the world when you are behind the wheel.

Well, glad to see that they truly cleaned things up. In 1990 one really has to get over WW2 fuse panels. That car was 85% new. Mainly the body above the bumper line stayed the same, everything else was new. I used to hate the C2 look. I got to admit, it is growing on me. A completely stripped and race prepped C2 sounds like a good alternative over a 3.6 conversion on an old car. That way you can get rid of the airbag and all those funky lights too!

In the years my car was made, they didn't try to make the trunk that nice. A little overspray here, a little there and a few swabs of black goop around the strut bolts. And before you knew it, rust. Must be nice to have something that nice and clean.
Nice car. I like 964s too. A lot. Never even been in one. |

First thing to do is ditch the Design 90 wheels for some Cup wheels. The aero mirrors would look nicer too. And of course, some lowering springs with some Bilsteins.
Congrats!

Have you thought about buying this book?:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0837602939/qid=1087905874/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/104-7362258-9590306?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 I found it rather useful when looking to purchase a 964. Also has a fair bit of detail for maintenance work etc. P.S. you need cup wheels, cup steering wheel, cup mirrors, lowered springs and new shocks P.P.S. check out the Rennlist 964 forum. P.P.P.S. Cat bypass pipes are really, really good

Hey Kurt
You bought yourself a 964? Congrats it looks nice, but I agree with Tyson's suggestions. Lower it and fit Cup1 wheels on it.

964's grow on me a little more each day. They're such a great bang for the buck and I really think their engines sound super. The one I drove two wks. ago felt every bit as fast as my 993, though a little quieter

Thanks gang. Well, I promised myself I'd keep this stock since I totally modified everything about the 3.2. I just want to keep it clean. Yeah, the more I drive it, the faster I realize it is. But I drive the 3.2 everyday to work, and there just isn't anything like the 3.2. When I get in it after being in this, it feels like I'm in a shell of the 964.
Gotta get the book and waiting for the owners manual. But it gives me the chance to rebuild the 3.2 and still have a p-car to drive!

Kurt,
You are going to keep liking your 964 more and more. Ask me how I know (at least, when my wife lets me drive "her car"). These cars were really the first time Porsche got "modern" with the 911's. You now have A/C that works! (although I don't know how much you will use it with a Cab), and those 3.6 motors sure are sweet. You will soon be thinking "why did they do it that way on the Carrera", as opposed to the other way around like you are now. Have tons of fun, Tom

You WILL modify this car. No way to avoid it. I thought 3.2's screamed out for mods and buying a 993 would rescue me from constant tinkering. WRONG. As good as they are out of the box, they all need to be modified. Just admit it. Resistance is futile.

HAHAHAHA. Well, I still have hope. One thing though, the AC doesn't blow very cold. I have a rudimentary question. I know guys are using R134 or whatever, for their earlier cars. What do I use for this?
If I find the right coolant, then I can just follow the other threads on how to fill it back up and at least make sure that's squared away.
